Finally a moment to celebrate our heroes: dads. A lot of men always “complain” that mothers get multiple Mother’s Day celebrations, especially in Nigeria. And I can’t help but laugh, because they’re not far from the truth. Everything about celebrating men is usually swept under the carpet. It’s done quietly.
I used to be one of those people. I didn’t celebrate Father’s Day the way I celebrated Mother’s Day. Then thank God for my mum. She made sure we celebrated my dad. I remember she’d give us money to buy chocolates or anything for my dad during Father’s Day and I’m glad she imbibed that culture in us. I was stubborn initially because I wasn’t close to my dad. But you dare not be stubborn close to my mum, she will bend you 😭😂 she also made sure we called my dad when we were in the university. She didn’t want us to only call when we needed money or any form of assistance. It was a chore then because my dad and I didn’t have a good relationship.
But now, everything has changed. I check up on my dad regularly. I buy him gifts randomly, no matter how small. And I’ve noticed how much he appreciates those little moments.
Sometimes many of us pay little attention to our dads. We don’t applaud them often. Why? Because we feel they’re just playing their roles lol. But let me say this: let’s celebrate our dads. Not only on Father’s Day. Do something nice for them randomly if you can. And not just them, but every father figure ik your life. They deserve to be celebrated, regardless of anything.
This is the part I’m supposed to post a picture with my dad but I don’t have any with him 🥲 I was always shy about taking pictures with my dad as a child. And now that I’m no longer a baby 🌚 I still don’t have any picture with him because I’m always the one capturing all the good moments at home. Always behind the camera 😑 it’s a flex at home but now I wish I have a picture 😩
Yesterday was Father’s Day, but thank God we’re still in June. So I’m celebrating my dad, and every father here. I’m celebrating your quiet strength, your presence, corrections, your protection, your care, love, and kindness. I’m sending plenty hugs to you. I pray you enjoy fatherhood to the fullest, your children, and all those who look up to you and those you care for, will always make you proud. God bless you! 🤗💙
Happy Father’s Day 💙
