Yesterday I saw a photo memory of mine from 9 years ago. I was in a storm drain that had a huge pillar of ice coming down from a manhole. This is a very rare thing for a storm drain because they usually have fast moving water and don't get cold enough no matter how cold it is outside.
I wanted to see it once again and made my way to the entry point. When I got there I was surprised to see the half of the tunnel that wanted to go into, was thick looking ice instead of water!
Very quickly I saw the ice pillar.
Unfortunately the ice wasn't very think after going in about 100 feet. You can see the holes in the ice from my foot steps. Despite having wet feet, I made it.
Getting close, I looked up and realized the ice was not from a manhole. It's just an open square in the roof of the tunnel (this is also very rare to see).
With my feet getting colder by the second and my toes starting to get a burning sensation, I quickly started to do some light painting and steel wool.
Not interested in getting frost bite, I quickly got back out. I would have loved to do more but safety first! Maybe I'll wait another week or two, for the ice to harden more (hopefully) and make my way back to this very unique underground ice pillar!
