Using apps to beat the high price of inflation. My Market Friday report.
Today's market story starts with me running out of milk for the morning cereal and my wife telling me to go buy grapes for 99 cents/lb along with 'other fruit' before I even got out of bed.
For for @dswigle and the rest of the #Marketfriday crew here we go 馃槈
After walking my dog it was time for breakfast...but no milk... that sucks. My first thought, head down to Superstore and buy some milk and the fruit my wife asked me to get.
Then I thought... Hmm... I have a new Too Good to Go app, maybe it has a deal on milk.
I open it up and I found something promising:
Now 7-Eleven is right beside the Superstore so why not order a Surprise bag and see if there is any milk in there. I also decided to order a 'ready to eat' and a 'pastry essentials' just for fun.
Just in case there isn't any milk in the deal I figure I'll quickly make up some Soy Milk. It really is as easy as 1, 2, 3...
- Soak your soybeans overnight, drain the water then add them to a blender.
( )
- Put the mix through a nutmilk bag into a crock pot. Season with some vanilla and sugar (for myself).
Then I let it sit for a couple hours on high while I go to Superstore and 7/11 to get some stuff. If there is milk, great, if there isn't milk then I have soy milk all ready to go when I get back....although it will need some time to cool.
First up is Superstore.
It's wet and not very nice out but I'm an actifitter so need those steps :)
I grab the bananas because .69/lb is the best I can find in town.
Then I check out the grapes.
Now 3.94 for 2lbs isn't a bad deal, but my wife told me 99 cents/lb so I better make sure that I'm not making a mistake!
That's where the flipp app is super useful.
I just type in what I'm looking for and it looks through all the local flyers to see what the price is. I can see that 1.97 is the best price in town and that is what I'll be paying. If there was somewhere that was 99 cents/lb I could get Superstore to match the flipp app which is really nice.
Either way I can tell my wife I got the best deal!
Result: I'm buying grapes and banana's at the self checkout.
Now Superstore works with the flashfood app. Flashfood lets them put short dated product into a closed off area, offer deep discounts, and get rid of it fast....but only to app users.
The area looks like this:
I open up the app and find these deals:
Sausages at $1.94? Count me in so I purchase those as well 馃槉
Then it is off to 7/11 to pickup my surprise bags!
7/11 Really isn't my go to store for anything because its usually more expensive on almost everything. The exceptions are refills on hot-chocolate on cold days and refills on gigantic cups of soft drinks during really hot days. Also a fast place to pick up food while I'm travelling long distances.
Today however I'm picking up 3 mystery bags. The person behind the counter seems a little confused about the Too good to go app. However, I show him the app and he figures it out quickly, goes to the back and comes back with these:
They are heavy and I'm pretty sure I got my money's worth ($14) as I'm walking home with them.
I get home and the soy milk is done so I throw it into a pitcher and into the fridge.
What is in my surprise bags?
Load of bread
2 Muffins
1 Box chocolate brownies
Roast Beef Sandwich
Pizza Sub.
Not bad for $3.99! (Canadian)
How about bag #2?
2L of Chocolate Milk.... sigh I needed regular milk but the kids will chug that down quickly.
Bacon Burger
another Pizza Sub
Chocolate Pudding
Cinnamon bun
Doughnut.
Again, I'm feeling like I got a pretty good deal on that haul too.
Which leaves bag #3
Roast beef sandwich,
Chicken wrap,
Pizza sub,
3 muffins,
pudding,
and a small container of half and half coffee cream.
Now I know that it costs me $2 to make a decent sandwich so getting three in a bag for less than $5 is a steal. Especially when I have two teenage boys who eat a lot!
Now the 7/11 stickers show that I got $80 worth of stuff for $14. Sure, 7/11 is way overprices but I still felt like I robbed the place with how little I spent!
In short:
Love the Flipp app to make sure I'm getting the best price.
Love the FlashFood app for getting a last minute deal while I'm at the grocery store.
Love the Too Good to Go app for a mystery surprise!
Thanks for reading!
Until next Friday.
