Make your HIVE work for you

Warning dense boring rough content ahed

This is an article that I've been working on for months now. Yes, months. I've created a number of different accounts on Hive to see just how much return you can get on different Hive investments. Making money through Hive investments is one thing I very much want to focus on in this GLD community. I might be the only one posting...but if even one person sees a post and finds a way to make money on HIVE then I'll consider the whole endeavor a success.

So, to dlmmqb@dlmmqb who just wrote an article on Making money work for you. Which basically says don't leave money hiding under a rock, make it work for you so you can get a return on it. The exact same thing happens in Hive. You have liquid HIVE which give you 0% return. If you need to use them in the near future, great. If you are just sitting on them? Please put them somewhere else. The very same thing for HBD. If you hold onto HBD they make 0% interest. Stake them are get 15% return and you can always extract them in 3 days if you want.

Now I'm going to assume that most people know that the best way to make money on Hive is to post good content and curate. However, if you have very little HP then curation will get you no rewards. In that case...

Option #1 : Delegate!

Delegation (Hive Rewards)

stonegale.gld@stonegale.gld300304.4562.998Hive12%delegation to amazingdrinks@amazingdrinks

Delegating to different communities helps the community by giving their curator better voting strength and the delegator steady income. But if you notice not all communities give equal rewards. You will notice that all of these curators pay out in liquid HIVE, great if you are trying to grow your HP.

Option #2 : Delegate for rewards not in HIVE!

Delegation (Non Hive Rewards)

AccountInitial InvestmentCurrent ValueHive RewardsNon-Hive RewardsReturnInvestment
ashflare@ashflare300304.4490.0310.69/mo (4.634 held) PAKX7.2%Delegation to @PAKX

leo-voter.gld@leo-voter.gld100101.2280.002.14 LEO12.31%Delegation to leo.voter@leo.voter

The crystalwing account actually sells the LEO regularly to purchase HIVE to power a faucet which I'm in the process of programming so its numbers are skewed. The Indiaunited delegation holds all the IUC since I started it so I can't calculate the percentage for this month (oops on my part).

@PAKX is special. Yes it only shows 7.2% return and at low amounts held that is the actual number. However if you hold enough PAKX tokens you start receiving a daily hive reward. Keep building your stash of PAKX and you start getting upvotes from the curator. It is less straightforward than many of the other delegation options but worth looking into.

Option #3 : Delegate for rewards on the Hive Engine

AccountInitial InvestmentInvested asIncome receivedReturnInvestment
hive-engine.gld@hive-engine.gld100Hive178.997 BEE1.093 Hive13.1%Delegate to bee.drone@bee.drone
hive-engine.gld@hive-engine.gld100Hive105.142 WorkerBee2.82422 BEE18.6%Delegate to ph1102@ph1102

Now these ones need a little explanation. BEE tokens run the Hive-engine. If you stake your BEE then delegate your staked BEE to the bee.drone@bee.drone you get a decent return in HIVE. WORKERBEE tokens are the hive-engine governance token and they pay out in BEE. If you stake there is a chance you get a reward, however, if you stake and delegate then you share in the pool. That's what I've done and the return at 18.6% seems excellent. However, if you look closer... I bought WORKERBEE at a considerable discount. If I was to buy them now? 100 Hive would only get me 66 WORKERBEE and my return would only be 11.6%. Which still isn't too bad.

Curation

Now, if you DO have enough HP to have votes that count you may just want to upvote content yourself. Great if you can find 10 good posts each day everyday. Or, option #2 go to https://hive.vote/ and setup a curation trail and have the autovoter work for you. In this case I've setup two curation accounts. One follows the OCBD trail and the other follows a custom curation trail setup to follow GLD coin holders.

What kind of return do you get by voting yourself and cutting out the middleman?

AccountInvestmentCurrent ValueHive accrued% returnFollowing
codbane@codbane300319.1511.326(22 days)7.23%Follows OCDB curation trail
gromphus.gld@gromphus.gld300318.3811.121(22 days)6.12%custom curation trail
lease.gld@lease.gld151415149.5097.54%Spend HP to lease HP to follow custom curation trail

Better than some delegation rewards but worse than others. Your choice on this one.
As for leasing HP to curate? If you can lease for 7.5% or less its a good deal. If you are curating a community and you want to get something for you and something for the community then it makes sense up to 15%. Leasing is a niche thing :)

Holding

There are a few coins which pay you to hold them. As mentioned PAKX is one of them but the three I am primarily focused on are: HELIOS, SURGE, and EDSI. The Helios coin I'm still researching so more on that next month. EDSI and SURGE... The numbers are below.

AccountInvestmentAlt CoinMonthly Return% returnCoin Held
dcabot.gld@dcabot.gld100Hive99.4 EDSI1.05 Hive12.68%Holds EDSI coins
edsi.gld@edsi.gld100Hive100 EDSI1.072 Hive12.864%Holds EDSI coins
helios.gld@helios.gld100Hive340.986HeliosHold Helios Coin**Watch in 30 daysHolds HELIOS coin
surge.gld@surge.gld100Hive25.02 Surge0.288 HBD39.4%Holds Surge Coin

But take the SURGE return with a big warning. I purchased the SURGE at the IPO price of 4 HIVE to 1 SURGE. When the price of HIVE tanked the price of SURGE has gone up. Currently SURGE is 5.65:1 which would make the return 27.8%. If HIVE continues to weaken SURGE return is excellent, however, if HIVE appreciates SURGE return will weaken. Just something to consider.

Okay... That's enough for the inaugural post on different ways to get income on HIVE. There are other .gld accounts which will have a role in the future but in this post I'm just going to mention them and I'll go over their purpose in future updates.
