Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) used to fast with great piety, restraint and simplicity. He not only endured hunger and thirst during the day, but also guarded his tongue, eyes and heart from sin. His fast was filled with the fear of Allah, always filled with tearful supplications and seeking forgiveness. He did not like luxury during Iftar; he would break his fast with a little dates, bread or water. He used to say that true fasting is to control oneself and feel the pain of the poor. At night, he would spend more time in prayers, Qiyam al-Layl and reciting the Quran. While fasting, he would inquire about people and deliver food to the homes of the poor. His fast was a unique example of humility and self-sacrifice even among leaders. He always feared that fasting would not be limited to formalities, but would be accepted by Allah. Therefore, Umar's fast was a shining example of worship, self-purification and humanity.
