Metalfreak used to spend time with his pet bird every day. He would pet it, clean its cage and let it fly. “I can’t do this anymore. Who cares?” he said as he lay in his messy bedroom in Dhaka.
The man, in his 40s, asked to use his pseudonym. He is seriously addicted to Yaba. The drug, a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine, is destroying countless lives in Bangladesh.
“This thing has completely destroyed my sanity,” he said.
The word “Yaba” in Thai means “crazy drug.” It is estimated that millions of people in Bangladesh are addicted to the drug, and the number is growing.
Metalfreak said the effects of Yaba last for four to five hours. After taking Yaba, he would sleep for 12 hours or more at a time, feeling extremely tired after staying awake for three consecutive days.
