PARTE 1

Chapter 1
The light of a powerful bolt of lightning that split the sky in half before crashing against the metal flagpole where the flag of Florence was flying, welcomes a foreign carriage to the "Palazzo Pitti" on this dark night of heavy rain, as cold as the trembling body of the tiny man he brought to the meeting with the head of the most important family in Italy. It is the year of our Lord 1557, in the main hall of the official residence of the Duke of Florence, Cosimo I de Medici, this visitor from distant lands waits impatiently and totally bewildered. Buddy, as he was nicknamed since he was a child, is one of the last links in the banking chain of the wealthy group. For an unknown reason, he was summoned to the palace by his intransigent cousin, something that causes him a bewilderment that has corroded his mind since 7 hours ago when he boarded the transport that brought him practically forced to the meeting.
A fine butler leads the foreigner to a private enclosure in one of the lower corners of the majestic building, so that he can take a bath and change his clothes for something more suitable for an interview with the high personality he is about to meet. Then he is taken by a guard to the regent's office, where he is announced by one of the secretaries, slowly opening the two immense doors with gold carved decorations, where the heads sculpted in wood of two gargoyles that join their beaks on the handles stand out, which causes him even more intimidation and nervousness than he already has. In the depths of the dimly lit room, illuminated only by two chandeliers that make a very tall, mysterious-looking, malevolent, stern man dressed in iron military garb stand out in the darkness, who is immersed in a pile of plans and documents on the most imposing desk Buddy has ever seen, which makes him swallow so thickly and his Adam's apple almost gets stuck in his throat, before he utters a few timid words of greeting.
The Gentleman in the office is the Duke of Florence and also a distant relative of this visitor, with whom he barely crossed words a few times in his life, although he still remembers with great pleasure when he met him as a child in the castle in Tuscany, a territory that was ruled by his father, whom everyone called "the old man" and where they spent a magnificent summer vacation, while the adults talked business. A disturbing and uncomfortable silence took over the room for a few seconds, before the burly military man stood up to fix his sharp, piercing gaze on Buddy's thin, pale humanity, something that further upset his nervousness and insecurity. With his hands behind his back, the ruler approached without saying anything, frowning, but manifesting the finesse of a gentleman of high society walking slowly, then just gave him a strong slap on the shoulder with his giant hand that almost threw him against the shiny marble floor, which caused him to laugh and let out a big laugh while he said:—Gee, chick, look how you've grown, come give your cousin a hug!

Feeling the air return to his lungs and the color to his face, while the deep fear left his mind, Buddy reciprocated the regent's kindness and hugged him too, remembering the times when they were a couple in the war games where they participated when they were young apprentices, while they walked intertwined towards the dining room where a great banquet awaited them. During dinner, finally the lord of the palace told Buddy the reason for his summons, while recounting a series of events that had taken place in the Tuscan castle where they once spent such pleasant moments, the Duke recounted while smoking a dark pipe, how the legend of a supposed witch who settled her coven in one of the nearby woods frightened the farmers in the area, causing all kinds of rumors to spread among the plebs about the lack of strength in the lord of the fortification to be able to defend them from attacks.
The people of the community said that the witch was responsible for souring the milk of the cows, bringing a plague of moles and drying up many crops, because she was preparing a majestic event of sorcery called the Festival of the Beast, with which she would seal her pact as consort of Satan, something that took much more power, when the last Medici of the castle died of a strange disease, which everyone attributed without hesitation to an act of witchcraft. However, in the opinion of the Lord of Florence, this was just hearsay and for that reason he needed Buddy to come immediately to take possession of the abandoned fortress with a group of troops, for which he would be appointed Feudal Lord by the King, his mission would obviously be to bring order with an iron government that would give security to the villagers and enough confidence to retake the crops.
Of course, none of this would be possible without a relentless hunt to capture the witch and her entourage to bring her to divine justice, that is why the Pope himself had appointed an emissary to accompany him. Buddy sighed deeply, as he opened his bulging eyes wider than usual, taking a big gulp from a glass of wine before answering, knowing that refusing such a request could be labeled as treason to the Crown. So without any alternative in his mind, he put on his face a feigned smile and accepted with a simple—Count me in, cousin—to which the happy man replied:—I knew I could count on you! I knew I could count on you, you are a pure Medici who will not let the family name down, although I must confess that you were not my first choice, since 5 cowards had already refused out of fear and superstitions. This comment encouraged an unbearable curiosity in Buddy that forced him to ask, and what did you do with them Cosme? A comment that completely silenced all noise on the table and its surroundings, before with a hoarse voice and a crazed gesture he answered him by hitting the table, "I killed them for traitors!
