I saw my first firefly (lightning bug) of the summer. My kiddos would have been jealous as fireflies bring them a lot of joy (as I am sure they did for me when I was a kid).
The weather in our town has been cooler than usual. And as I walked outside, I could smell rain in the air. The combination of this experience was rather remarkable. Even as an adult, I had to stop and enjoy the magic of the moment:
- visual beauty as the firefly glowed
- cool sensation as the breeze touched my skin
- crisp aroma of a rainstorm heading my way
And as I walked back towards the house, I saw that singular firefly light up one more time. It brought a smile to my face.
Fireflies are like opportunities!
As I have been rethinking about last night, I started seeing an application in my daily life. Fireflies are like opportunities!
- Fireflies are a limited-time only kind of event. You have to be at the right place at the right time, and you have to have your eyes open, ready to see them. Opportunities are the same way. The best opportunities are available to people who have their eyes open.
- Fireflies don't land in your lap. You have to chase them. I fear that too many people (myself included sometimes) expect great gain with little to no work. Only on a couple of occasions have I seen a firefly land on someone who was not chasing it. I rarely see an opportunity present itself to someone who is not involved in the chase. Can it happen? Yes. Does it happen? Not often.
- Fireflies are worth the wait. Their beauty never grows old. They are like little surprises that catch you off guard each time you see them. Opportunities, the good ones at least, are worth waiting for. They add to the experience of life instead of taking away.
Final Thoughts
I appreciate the moments when I can feel like a kid again. But even more, I appreciate the moments where I am allowed to relive child-like wonder and then have the opportunity to process and dream as an adult.
I want to hear from you.
- Have you seen a firefly lately?
- Do you agree with my assessment that fireflies are like opportunities?
- What is an opportunity you want to take in the next 4 weeks?
Thanks for stopping by!
