Hi again 👋
Autumn is my favourite time to visit the beach. No crowds, softer light, and that particular quiet that only shows up once the summer tourists have gone home. This time I headed out alone, on a weekday afternoon, to Praia de Angeiras, a long stretch of sand just north of Porto that still feels wild and a little bit forgotten. No agenda, just a pair of good shoes and a few hours to walk.

The walk starts on a wooden boardwalk that drops down through the dunes before opening onto the beach. Angeiras sits in the parish of Lavra, part of the municipality of Matosinhos, and it holds a Blue Flag, which tells you the water quality here is taken seriously even though the beach itself still looks refreshingly untamed. In the distance I could just make out another walker and their dog, two tiny shapes on a very big stretch of sand.

Further along, the boardwalk keeps hugging the dune grass, and that's when I first spotted it in the distance: a long stone breakwater reaching out into the sea, with a tiny striped marker at its tip. I had no idea yet that it would become the turning point of my walk. For now it was just a thin grey line on the horizon, pulling my curiosity forward.

Just off the main path, a small backwater pool had formed where a stream meets the beach, still and mirror-flat in the late afternoon light. Standing motionless in the middle of it was a little egret, almost certainly an Egretta garzetta, the small, all-white heron that is a common sight along the Portuguese coast, patiently waiting for a fish or a crab to move within range. I stood there a good while, not wanting to break the spell.

Back on the open sand, the beach stretched out almost empty in both directions, just a few wooden fences planted to hold the dunes together against the wind. This is the part of Angeiras that gets described as having kept its "wild" character, and walking across it alone on an autumn afternoon, with nothing but footprints and the sound of the waves, I understood exactly why.

Closer to the water, the low autumn sun turned the whole sea into a sheet of glitter, so bright I had to shield my eyes to look straight at it. A lone gull cut across the glare, and to the right I could see the breakwater again, much closer now, with the sea breaking white against its rocks. I knew that was where I was heading next.

Stepping onto the breakwater itself felt like leaving the beach behind entirely. This stretch of concrete and rock is part of the Portinho de Angeiras, a small shelter harbour for local fishing boats that was first promised back in 2001 and only completed decades later, after repeated delays, at a cost of nearly 3M€. Walking down the narrow concrete path with boulders piled on either side, I could see the little red and white marker post waiting at the far end.

Halfway out, I turned around to look back, and the view completely changed. From here Angeiras looks like a proper little seaside town, houses climbing the low hill behind the beach, the sand still dotted with the last visitors of the season enjoying one of those unexpectedly warm autumn afternoons. It's easy to forget, from the water's edge, how much life sits just behind the dunes.

A little further along, the breakwater curves gently and the whole bay opens up at once, the village wrapped around the water like an amphitheatre. This shelter harbour was built specifically to give local fishermen a safer place to land their boats, reportedly extending the number of workable sea days from around 100 to well over 250 a year, a huge difference for a community that depends on the Atlantic for its living.

Right next to the striped marker post, the water on both sides had gone almost completely still, blue and calm under a cloudless sky. After the crashing waves on the beach side, this felt like a different place altogether, sheltered and quiet, exactly what the whole structure was built to achieve in the first place.

At the very tip, standing on the massive concrete tetrapod blocks that absorb the worst of the Atlantic's energy, the view opens straight out to the open ocean. A small boat idled nearby and a lone swimmer bobbed in the water a little further out, both of them tiny against all that blue. It felt like a fitting place to stop, turn around, and start the walk back before the light faded completely.

....
Walking back along the beach as the afternoon light turned gold, I kept thinking how much a place can offer when you simply give it time and go alone, no itinerary, no rush. Angeiras isn't a postcard destination with queues and souvenir shops, it's a working stretch of coast with fishermen, egrets, dunes, and one very determined breakwater that took twenty years to finally get built. Sometimes the best trips are the quiet, solo ones.
