Hi 👋

Visit Spain - La Malva-rosa.png

Some of the best moments of a trip cost nothing at all. We got up before the city did and walked to the seafront in Valencia, hoping to catch the sunrise over the Mediterranean. We started at Malvarrosa, went north to La Patacona in Alboraia, and came back along the same golden sand, with more than thirty photos to show for it.

We set out early and found the sun peeking between the palm trees, at the end of a quiet square that opens onto the beach. Out on the sand it was a small white disc over a hazy sea, with the straw parasols standing in silhouette. The beach was almost empty and enormous, and what looked like a small service vehicle was already working near the water, which explains why the sand looks so tidy in the morning. Two date palms framed the sunrise like a natural picture frame, and we never tire of seeing palms lit from behind on this coast.

The parasols in a row look like a tiny thatched village, and the Mediterranean has almost no tides, so the waterline barely moves and mornings feel wonderfully calm. Away from the water we found old houses glowing pink in the early light, one of them a restaurant called Levante, a Malvarrosa many visitors miss. Then the sun climbed higher and turned everything orange, with a few early swimmers already in the water, and honestly we were a little jealous. The promenade is wide, flat and lined with tall palms, with the cranes of the port of Valencia far on the left, one of the busiest ports in the Mediterranean.

From the promenade wall you see how far the beach stretches. Malvarrosa alone has around 1.8 kilometres of fine sand, and we read that its name goes back to the nineteenth century, when the marshy land was drained and planted with malva-rosa flowers. Walking north we reached a big painted sign reading La Patacona, with locals on their morning stroll going the same way. Among four palms and a few dark birds pecking at the sand, Patacona felt like a quieter extension of Malvarrosa, and we liked it immediately. Behind the beach stand modern buildings with glass fronts, and at this hour the terraces were still empty. We also read that a railway line reached this shore in 1852, which helped turn a marsh into a seaside escape.

A wooden beach hut and a volleyball net gave this corner some personality. The Valencian coast faces east, which is why the sun rises straight out of the sea, and painters have loved this light for generations. Joaquín Sorolla painted here, and the writer Vicente Blasco Ibáñez set novels along this shore, including Flor de Mayo. Back on the promenade the palms marched toward the horizon, and the sun became a bright ball with a glittering path across the water. Two more palms, a street lamp and flat stones laid out like a path made yet another frame. Some of Sorolla's beach scenes hang in a museum in Madrid, but the light is free.

The paving has a geometric pattern, and the promenade is clearly built for people on foot, with striped blue and white beach cabins lining the sand. Another huge painted wall welcomes visitors to Alboraia, the municipality that includes Patacona, and then came the one we wanted: La Patacona in big white letters, beside a covered pavilion decorated with painted blue waves. A line of stones reaches into the sea beside what looked like a small channel draining onto the beach. The harbour in the distance reminds us this is a working city, not just a postcard.

This sandy path between hedges and pink flowering shrubs leads from town to the sea. Alboraia is the land of tiger nuts, the base of horchata, so a cold glass with fartons belongs on any visit. Order it cold and ask for the fartons, the sweet elongated pastries made for dipping. Walking back south the promenade looked just as inviting, with pale stone benches under what look like Washingtonia fan palms, a species native to North America. Our favourite frame of the morning was the sun centred between the blue columns of the pavilion, and just behind the promenade stands a row of old colourful houses that recall a humbler seaside life.

Heading back to Malvarrosa the beach opened up again with the sun low on the left. The numbered cabins help visitors find their spot, and number 8 stood out against the pale sky. By now volleyball players had joined the morning walkers, a few pigeons had taken over the promenade, and the light turned warmer with a golden glow on the sand. Cabin number 7 sat alone while the sun tried to break through a small cloud, and mornings like this are why we say the best beach is the empty one. One more look down the promenade, with a seagull crossing the sky, showed how it runs straight for kilometres.

A round white first aid post with a red cross stands on the sand, which is good to know when travelling with family. Looking toward the harbour, the sand is marked with long curved lines where the service vehicle had passed, and in the distance you can make out the marina and the seafront buildings. Volleyball poles stand all over the beach like a forest of dark sticks, and early players were already warming up. The sun hung low behind them, a golden goodbye to the morning, and the best sunrises are the ones you walk away from slowly. That is exactly what we did.

This walk reminded us that Valencia is far more than its old town and the City of Arts and Sciences. A simple sunrise between Malvarrosa and La Patacona gave us calm, colour and exercise before breakfast. If you visit, set an alarm, bring a camera and finish with a horchata and fartons. Thanks for reading, see you soon!
