Barn Owl Scientific name: Tyto alba. Barn owls are found almost everywhere in the world. My pictures are all from California in the San Francisco bay area. Check out this series of photos showing a barn owl tilting his head one way and then the other.
I've read online that owls tilt their head because their eyes are basically fixed looking forward. Owls move their head using their flexible neck to look around the way we would by moving our eyes. I also read that by moving their head, their ears move especially getting their ears on different levels which helps to triangulate where a sound is located - like a quiet little mouse.
