Wrest Park is a stately home near us. It is owned by English Heritage and the gardens are open to the public. They are extensive with various lakes and buildings. My band @themoonshots played there last Christmas when we were in the library of the house. We were asked back to play outside this time. They have had variously local groups there playing on Sundays. We were playing by the orangery so they let us drive in to unload, but we had to have one of the guides lead us in as there would be visitors wandering around. There was a gazebo set up for us to keep the sun off. Luckily it had cooled down from the highs of a few days before, but was still warm. We took down the sides to let some breeze through.
You can see how dry it is here. There have been a few drops of rain since the gig, but not enough to make a real difference. There were lots of people around and some set up their chairs before we started. Apparently some were coming every week. The ice cream van was doing good business and we had some during our break.
We played about twenty tunes over a couple of sets of about 45 minutes. Just before the break guitarist Mick's amplifier cut out. There was some issue with the power supply, but we had a backup. He was ready with a spare amplifier and was relieved it was still working. Also playing were @daniellemurray on clarinet,
@purplesinger on piano and
@renaissancegeek on flute. I was on drums of course.
We had a few issues getting the sound right, but it seems people could hear. In a big area like that you can need more amplification. My drums were not amplified, but I have an option for that if needed. I could see people tapping their feet and we had some nice comments from the audience. This was the biggest audience we have played to in this band.
We just do this for fun and would happily play there again. We may get to do that this Christmas.
