Williamsburg, Virginia
Colonial Williamsburg is town reconstructed to look like Williamsburg in the 1700s. It's an interesting place to visit if you're in Virginia and surprisingly detailed. The town is much larger than I thought it would be and really feels like another time. You'll notice the lack of power lines immediately, which is very nice for taking pictures of buildings like this house:
You'll also notice how dedicated the employees are. They do everything they can to act according to the time period. Here you can see some sheep grazing in the city with a nearby shepherd.
These sheep are free to wander around the city and are fun to watch.
One of the main attractions is The Governor's Palace. This is a lovely building rebuilt with a keen eye for detail. The inside is painted in colors matching the original blue prints and it is decorated with items from the buildings original housekeeping records.
The backyard of the Governor's Palace is also complete with a peaceful pond and intricate hedge maze.
On the other end of the city, there is a lovely courthouse building. Here you can learn all about the legal processes of the time and about some of the trials that took place. The Revolutionary War caused a major issue for the court house because the judges were British and went back to England during the war, which meant no trials could proceed. This resulted in overflowing jails for people awaiting trial.
If you're at all interested in colonial history I strongly recommend Williamsburg. The town is delightful and the restaurants in the colonial town are delicious. I enjoyed the best bangers and mash I've ever had while eating at
Josiah Chowning's Tavern. This is also a very kid friendly place. If you're traveling through Virginia sometime soon I believe they decorate the town for Christmas so it is a good time to go.
