Man, I suck at doing laundry. i think this is day three of me promising myself I’d make it in time to the laundromat.. maybe even day four. There seems to be some sort of invisible force holding me back from walking up those steps into that little white room. Or I’m just lazy as shit.
Yesterday was a fairly normal-ass day. Nothing too out of the ordinary. Wednesday nights are my weekly shift at the restaurant, and additionally my manager asked if I wanted to pick up a few hours in the morning at my normal job.. which amounted to two five hour shifts with a short gap between. I spent that gap doing the usual routine- pulling a ton of stuff out of my van to “organize”, shortly before running out of time and frantically stuffing it all back in. I followed my kitchen shift with a short night run and some brainrot television.
Today was an objectively better day, though. It was my last day off before I head back east to see family and my buddy’s memorial, so I took the opportunity to sleep in, as it would be my last for the foreseeable future. A more responsible person would;ve frantically ran around doing all the errands that I badly need to do before leaving, but I’m not that person. I’ve been going through all hell, and although I may regret it in a few weeks, I said FUCK it, and had the day I wanted to instead.
I had jostled my phone off its charge in my sleep, so I woke up to a completely dead phone. I knew I wanted to go run around the lake, and wasn’t entirely sure how long I was going to spend on that side of the highway, so I wanted to get it as charged as possible before taking off. I took a walk over to the gas station to get some mediocre coffee as I waited, and finally got impatient around 65%. Not bad, you might think.. but my red, cracked, abused little smartphone will randomly drop like 15 percent just from something as simple as unlocking the screen. So it’s always a gamble.
Not that I really needed it, anyway. It’s just always nice to have- especially for someone as impulsive as I. I will randomly just completely change course for my day at the drop of a dime. But, anyways, I was off.
Right as I was leaving the van, I realized I hadn’t finished my coffee. I also wanted to bring another drink for post-run in case I wanted to just linger around the lake for awhile. So, after dashing across the four lane highway to the forest trail bringing me to the infamous Trillium Lake, first order of business was hiding my mug and my can. I found an unused campsite, and just prayed that it didn’t become occupied during the time I was away, and some person just happens to think they found some lazy person’s old ditched items. Rest assured, four hours later, they were still there.
Not far into the run, I encountered a four-way intersection I had been to a thousand times before. All of a sudden I realized, I only knew the road that took you to the campground, and the one I came from. Their two opposing siblings, I had no clue. So instead of taking my usual left, I hauled ass straight. At the time it felt like a mistake, but now that it’s over I’m grateful it happened.
After encountering the only sign oon this rocky backroad(the odd penis-like thing pictured above), I was met with mile after mile of nothing but uphill. Unfortunate, as I had come over here to run today as I was sick of running up a literal mountain from my recent campsite. I thought it was just going to take me up to some campsite and dead end, but it never really seemed to end. And never stopped going up either. After about 4.5 miles, I decided I would revisit my curiosity another time, and turned around.
I finished up the run at somewhere between 10 and 11 miles. I had no plans when I set out, so I was pretty proud of that, especially with the never ending hill that comprised most of it. I hung out at the lake a little while longer until I went home and.. SURPRISE!
Holy shit, that was close. That could’ve been my damn van.. it wasn’t more than 30 feet away. I’m not sure when it happened, but it was still there when I got there, so I couldn’t have missed it by much. Sure, this random little forest road is rarely used, but it is used by staff of the mountain as well as a power line, so someone would have noticed. Theres also one way in and out, and I’m right at the bottom, so there’s zero chance any of those service vehicles got all the way to the bottom simply to just turn around and drive back up the mountain, chalking it up to a tomorrow problem.
Anyway, I figured I could just handle myself and there’s nothing I love more than swinging an axe, so I got out the one from behind my bed which, for the life of me, I can’t remember where it came from. But I knew it would come in handy one day, and that day was today.
Old faithful made quick work of the situation and I was able to drag it off the road. I’m just so, SO happy it didn’t land on my van. Or me. But I think I’m happier for the van. In a perfect world, this old Chevy would outlive me. I wrapped up the night with finishing a surprisingly good book and eating some soup i experimented with last night. Not bad. Running, reading, and cold soup. I really am unc now
