Yesterday was a damn great Friday. I normally work weekends; but we have inventory this week, so our schedules are all out whack. That is to say, I had completely forgotten that I have both Saturday and Sunday completely off.. until about half an hour before close. It was a wonderful surprise.

I caught the early bus up to the mountain to hang out and do some writing before my shift started. I mean “caught” literally; I lost track of time packing up my bag and was at a full sprint trying to catch up to it. Luckily, it was one of the nice drivers, so he pulled over and let me on. There are a couple of drivers who would’ve peeled out without even a sideways glance.

The work day was highly uneventful. Without the lifts spinning for the tourists and the mountain bike park, this past week has seen morbidly low foot traffic. Weddings are our main savior at the moment, and also tend the bring a higher percentage of friendly customers.

I closed up at the hotel gift shop around 630, and made a last minute decision to just stay and hang out in the lobby for the evening. This isn’t a typical hotel- I mean, even calling it that seems wrong. It’s a strangely intricate historical landmark full of insane woodcarvings and steelwork. It’s also most known for being the Overlook Hotel in the movie The Shining.. even though the cumulative runtime of the building is somewhere around the 50 second mark. Lmao. It IS a fascinating building, though. I made a kind of shitty post about it a couple of months ago but I plan to remake one and do it a little more justice sometime here in the near future.

I ended up staying up there much later than I thought I would. I got absolutely entranced by a book I was reading; sitting by the warm fire, the background noise of inebriated wedding guests putting my anxiety to rest. I’m truly afraid of silence.

Before I knew it, it was 11 o’clock. Sitting where I was, around the multi-faced fireplace that kind of serves as a centerpiece for the lodge, I couldn’t see a single window.. so I had no clue how long it had been dark for. I still had a 5+ mile hike down a dark road until I was back at the van. No lights, thick trees on either side.. I was admittedly a little annoyed with my own poor decision making skills.. but it turned out to be much more pleasant than I thought.

I popped in my right AirPod; the only one that works, actually. I have no idea why I still have the left one in the case- and put on a podcast. The road goes in and out of service for long periods of time on the road, so I’ve learned the hard way that with my pitiful Spotify Free; anything but a long-form podcast will eventually stop playing. Of course, I happened to pick a “best of” type of episode, that was specifically with horror directors about recent films. And I had seen each and every one. So, as the various directors talked about different scenes, I could fully picture them in my head. I have to come clean; in the pitch black, quiet woods at midnight.. I definitely spooked myself out a bit. But it was fun.

Hope everyone had a good day. Go pet a dog!
