Greetings, I hope you are having a very good week. As far as possible, and as I always say:
If you're not having a good time, don't worry, all this is going to happen. Even though it may not seem like it. And meanwhile, the situation you're in happens: we have #videogames, unbeatable companions, to enjoy the good moments in life or to help us distract ourselves and overcome frustrations and difficult moments.
I have a complicated post on this occasion, I've been trying for a couple of days to make the most positive assessment possible of the game Deep Sky Derelicts. Because, despite the flaws this #indie game has and despite not having a good story or any solid story, it's a fun game, I really like its graphical presentation and I really want to find a way to overcome its problems.
I'll do my best, I know that indie game developers don't have the resources of big companies, and they work hard to present and sell their products to the best of their ability.
Deep Sky Derelicts is an #indie game that was developed by Snowhound Games and was published by Fulgrum Publishing and reached the video game market at the end of September 2018.
It is a space dungeon crawler video game, featuring turn-based card combat, RPG elements, and Roguelike elements.
It is sure that everyone knows what this last term refers to, but I also indicate the difference between roguelite and roguelike:
In #roguelike games by definition each game is generated procedurally, every time a new game is generated it is different and we start without any kind of progress or improvement.
In #roguelite games they are not as strict, they are also procedurally generated like roguelike, but we still keep some progress every time a new game is started.
In Deep Sky Derelicts, we have the option to activate permadeath or not on high difficulty, when the group dies, and a new game will have to be started from scratch where all the scenarios will be procedurally generated again. On normal difficulty, we can revive fallen party members, if at least one manages to survive and make it to the med center, or load a previous game.
Now why do I like the game? What's interesting about it?: The game proposal will remind us a lot of the famous Darkest Dungeon, but in Deep Sky we find a game that is more accessible and has fewer complicated mechanics.
It's a simpler and less harsh version of the adventure, but now set in space, we don't have to take care of the mental state of the characters, it's less dark.
I find the design of the different environments and characters attractive, fun. The music section isn't quite like other indies I've reviewed, such as Wonder Boy, which used an orchestra of real musicians for the in-game soundtracks, but it's quite acceptable.
The adventure of exploring derelict spaceships, taking care of the group energy that is consumed by each advance in the ships or when fighting, looting objects and overcoming challenges and enemies, is something that I enjoy a lot.
The combat animations reminded me of Ancient Enemy, which is another turn-based combat game with cards, which I had brought you before in another post.
What parts are the negatives, that have made it difficult for me to present the game in a better way?
The tutorial is quite poor, even after two days trying to cover the game as much as possible, I can't find any description of some skills and I don't see or understand if they are useful or not. Abilities that I see in tools or cards such as: discard, there is no information in the game that I have found that describes the value or use of all the terms that are used.
At the beginning of the game, during the selection of characters and their attributes: You are presented with different classes with different default attributes, and some minor attributes to add to the character, (such as fidget, which gives + to evasion, or crafty + to recycle) but you have no idea which one to assign the description for when you start the game is not very clear.
The codex or glossary needs improvements, in order to quickly locate what we need to know, and as I said I still can't find a part that describes what the 'discard' attribute is supposed to do.
Card fights are quite flawed, you are randomly assigned cards from your deck every battle, but you may find yourself in the situation that in four or five turns of all your characters there won't be a single attack card. While in each round you will receive attacks from the opponents.
There are very unfair fights, I have seen myself in a fight against four enemies and when only one is left standing, it spits out three or four more enemies with full life.
and when only two enemies are left standing, they spit out three or four more enemies again.
And as I said, you can play several rounds without any of your characters getting a single attack card. It's sick of annoying.
As of the third ship onwards there will be enemies with high evasion ability and if you don't have a blade trap or a tracker type character to mark the enemies for you, you will lose all your attacks. And there's no instruction telling you what you need to counter the evasion ability.
You can hire some other mercenary at the bar to replace a downed character or a character that doesn't match your playstyle, from the same or any other specialty, but you can only have three members in your party, and you're going to have battles against Five or more enemies.
Several combats are quite poorly balanced, more than five enemies is abusive.
The gun shop needs more variety, more frequent inventory changes, and more vendors.
In some other ship we get a vendor, but it's not a sure thing, in the ship vendors, they sell you random items, they may sell you an item that none of your characters can use or that you simply don't want.
There are very few contracts in the mercenary bar. Missing more side missions.
The game is a good deal, and I understand that later DLC fixed some of the bugs, but they sell it for the same price as the base game. For me a #DLC doesn't make much sense if it costs the same or more than the base game.
It would be great, if they improved the interface, put more content in a structured way in the codex, or at least if all the terms of the game world were explained.
The big flaw that is most urgent to correct is in the combats, some are quite good, but in others the attack cards are practically invisible:
You can go four or five turns of all your characters without being able to fire a single shot or any melee attacks, even if you have more than half your deck full of attack cards (red cards are combat cards).
It needs at least one more complete tutorial mission, in which they show what is the 'focus', what is the importance of 'dodging', what is 'recycling', that explains: what is what, within the game world. In truth, the tutorial of this game is very wrong.
Despite everything, I would like to find some mod to improve the game a bit and make it more passable, the proposal is very worthwhile. So I'll see if I can find a way to find a solution that improves it in some way.
Thank you very much for stopping by and reading.
I hope you have a great week.
Peace.

Paz.
