In general, we want others to like us and like us. This is so because we are social animals, gregarious beings that, whether we like it or not, for mere survival we need to be recognized in the opinion of others. Depending on the values that each one has, this recognition will be sought in relation to strength, cunning, intelligence, fame, beauty, power and/or money. This need for social validation also regulates our instincts and makes our functioning as a society relatively stable and predictable. As in all cases, the golden mean, the middle ground, is important here, as extremes (not caring at all about the opinion of others, or caring too much) can harm us in some way.
Caring too much about the opinion others form of ourselves and living to meet external expectations are characteristics of "complacent personalities". This is not a psychological term, rather, it is a recognition we have made as a Society to categorize those people who are overly agreeable, caring, perfectionistic and constantly seeking to generate a positive impression on others. The funny thing is that most of the time these people achieve the opposite of their goal because the natural thing, and what really makes people empathize with you is to show yourself as you are, sometimes vulnerable, flawed, with limits, human.
Accommodating people put aside their opinions and thoughts to match those of the people around them. They are always available, avoid conflict at all costs, shape their personality and behavior according to the environment. They believe that the mood of others depends on them and that they constantly have to be doing things or being one way to be accepted.
These people do not know how to say no and do not know how to set limits. They may do things they don't like, they can get very complicated with time and responsibilities, because they take on more than they can, precisely to look good with everyone (even if they don't look so good with themselves). Deep down, complacent people are afraid of abandonment and rejection. They say what they think people want to hear, to avoid being judged or criticized. They tend to be insecure people because their worth is in someone else's hands.
Giving in and giving in in some circumstances is necessary to maintain bonds. Being nice and a good person is something we value very much as a Society. But sacrificing our own essence and authenticity to receive external approval is something that takes effort, mental energy and hides some pain or hurt.
I see that this will not only be a problem of the present, but also of the future, because before we could assume that we were nice and accepted people in social circles, but now we can measure it through likes, followers, visualizations. I know that these statistics make many people sacrifice their personality and interests. Their essence ends up being the currency of exchange, to receive some approval.
