Where am I? I try to move but the weight of a hairy leg prevents me from moving. Oh my God... did I sleep with the guy I just met yesterday? I try to jump out of bed, but all I get is a sharp twinge in my head, and a feeling of dizziness and an urge to vomit.
I knew that meeting a guy at night would not be a good idea, especially after being single for more than 2 years! This time my body betrayed me. I'm not the type of girl who usually sleeps with the guy on the first date. I turn to look at him and at least he looks as handsome as last night, what good news!
The problem is that I seem to have lost my memory and I don't remember anything we did... fragments of the night come to my mind like extracted from a puzzle box. We danced at the bar, I drank too much wine, we made out leaning against a lamppost while waiting for the Uber...and what else...how did I end up in this room? God...
This time my body is already more awake and responsive, so my attempt to get out of bed works. It's only when I get out of bed that I realize how luxurious the room is. The exquisitely designed upholstered walls, the perfectly decorated furniture. Are we in a hotel? God! I need coffee, I need coffee to wake up properly.
I locate the door of the room and get out of there. It's not a hotel, it's a house, and not just any house, a very expensive looking house. Who did I sleep with? I can't help blushing and laughing.
I walk down a long hallway and all I see are doors leading to other rooms, this house looks like a labyrinth! I find a spiral staircase and decide to go down that way. On the second floor I am surprised by a very spacious kitchen, with a perfect combination of marble, white and black. Next to the dining room there is a grand piano, and behind it the painting Le rêve, by Picasso, is it original?
Let's get back to what we came for! The coffee... where is the coffee in this house? I look for jars, containers, coffee powder, instant coffee, coffee drinks in the fridge... There's nothing! Doesn't this man drink coffee? This is already a redflag.
After 20 minutes looking for some coffee in that hyper-fancy kitchen I already have a headache and a very bad mood.
What do I do? Well, I'm not going to run out of coffee. This is the last alternative I resort to when I'm in a bind but it always saves me. It was taught to me by my grandmother, a quirky lady connected with the magical and dark aspects of life. She called it "the spell", and it was just that, a supernatural connection, a super power to transform any small object into whatever we wanted. She taught it to my cousins and me when we were just 18 years old. I wish I had learned more from her.
I take a jar of sugar, rub my hands together tightly until warm, circle the jar, close my eyes and pronounce the spell with the same tone and cadence my grandmother taught me.
A few minutes pass and nothing happens... something I'm doing wrong. I take a breath, rub my hands together, close my eyes, pick up the jar and as I utter the words I imagine the jar turning into a cup of coffee.
A small explosion sounds, my eyes are dazzled with a glow of all colors, in my hands appears a gumball. WHAT? What did I do wrong?
I repeat the procedure, with more excitement, with more energy. I hear the explosion, the glow and a cup appears... but full of water! No... I want coffee! I'm almost whimpering like a little girl.
I try a fourth time, my hands are very hot, I pronounce the spell with fervor and when I open my eyes I see that the cup is full of coffee. Eureka! I shout excitedly. I start to drink, and indeed it is coffee, the hottest, strongest, and sweetest.
I finish the cup of coffee and I feel my heart swell with joy and my head calms down, product of the caffeine. The guy upstairs doesn't worry me so much anymore. I don't know who he is, and I'm sure he doesn't know who I am either.
