I was supposed to head out last Friday to the El Cristo community, a rural area in my province that’s relatively close to the city. The plan was to bring, along with a friend, a batch of coffee beans that had already been roasted.

This post was meant to seal a different kind of relationship with coffee, but between the weather conditions that day and some changes in plans beyond my control, the trip was postponed. I can say that it annoyed me a little, but by midday the sun was out, and it almost felt like it had never rained at all.

I told myself: Hey, let’s go to Sombreritos y Tragos and order the cappuccino we always use as a benchmark for whether a place serves good coffee.

And so it was. I went out in search of the cappuccino test. This time, as I mentioned, it was midday. I’ve already told you that you have to come to this place early in the morning, since it’s a terrace and doesn’t have enough shade.

altSun was everywhere

You can imagine the heat was unbearable. I spoke with the waitress about the possibility of umbrellas in the future, and she kindly replied, “Yes, we’re already working on it.” So I went ahead and ordered the cappuccino.

But no way, when the order arrived, the disappointment was huge. I had never had such a poorly made cappuccino. Apparently, the girl in charge (who is also the waitress) is still learning, but even so, the flavor was not pleasant at all. On top of that, the cup wasn’t ideal either. There was no handle, and with it being so hot, there was no way to drink until the temperature dropped a bit (which didn’t happen very quickly, by the way).

altThis Capuccino wasn't feel good

That coffee, combined with the blazing sun, made my visit short so, I didn’t want to stay there any longer. So I learned my lesson: only go to Sombreritos y Tragos early in the morning, and never order cappuccino. Always stick to the espresso, which is really good.

The day was tainted by those bad moments, but I suppose that same day there were also people who didn’t drink coffee at all and that’s an even worse and sadder situation, don’t you think?
