Me ocurrió.

ENGLISH
Proposals that do not materialize, scheduled calls that never happen, phones turned off at the time of the appointment and even the fact of not showing up for a previously planned meeting without any explanation, just silence. Does it sound familiar? Has it happened to you in any area of your life? I previously thought ghosting only occurred in romantic relationships. However, I was recently the victim of a work situation where, during the process, the other person simply "disappeared" and although it's not the end of the world, I admit it hurts, makes me uncomfortable, frustrated and sad. I wanted to talk about this to put the issue on the table and help, from my experience and knowledge, anyone who may be going through a similar situation.
Let's start at the beginning: Let's see what is the definition of ghosting according to urban dictionary (1).
When a person cuts off all communication with their friends or the person they're dating, with zero warning or notice before hand. You'll mostly see them avoiding friend's phone calls, social media, and avoiding them in public.
This is a definition that fits romantic relationships, however, I am sure it happens in the workplace as well.
The phrase "Don't call us, we'll call you" after a job interview is something we can understand very well, it's even a meme. We know they won't call and we go to the next thing. Silence is also a response we can understand, especially when we send our resume and don't get a response. Other times, we go to a job interview and are told directly that they will look for someone else who better fits the profile, or that there are no more openings available. These are answers that, although they may hurt, allow us to close that "mental folder" and continue our job search.
But... What about those times when we are involved in slow, informal hiring processes and we don't have an answer as to whether we will be hired or not? Worse yet when during a process we stop getting an answer or there is ambivalent interest from the other side (seems like yes there is interest, then no, then yes).
It happened to me. Since July I have lived a kind of job ghosting: I received interesting and kind proposals, I showed my interest and willingness from the beginning but nothing ends up materializing. There is even a deafening silence from the other side that has made me feel very confused. A conversation was pending, it was scheduled, postponed and still has not happened.
What hurts about ghosting is not having the certainty of "no", holding on to the hope that the situation could change. The thoughts and emotions that this situation generates are not so nice. So what to do. Here a couple of tips that have worked for me:
Express your emotions: Talk to those close to you, tell them how the situation has made you feel. It's natural to feel that way after not having an explanation. Talk about your fears and the things that worry you. The absence of an answer from the other side generates emotions ranging from anger, sadness, confusion and disappointment to resignation. Live each of them and share them as needed.
Focus on what's next: Continue your job search process. Visualize new alternatives, develop self-confidence by focusing on cultivating your professional virtues and skills.
Learn to live with uncertainty: There may be an explanation, but you won't get it. Don't fantasize about the possibilities, it will bring more confusion. Hold on to the only thing you have. Sometimes the absence of an answer (even if it's in the middle of something that really seemed like it could be given) is itself an answer. Look no further, either inside or outside of yourself. Let go of those hopes and choose the next ones.
In my case, time has been key. The emotions have passed and the discomfort has diminished. What has been most difficult for me is not having an answer that gives direct closure to the process. However, I have chosen to close that door myself. I will not insist and I will not get my hopes up too high.
When you search the internet for labor ghosting most of the information that comes up is related to the disappearance of candidates and how they leave their own processes unfinished. However, there is the other side of the story, and it happens in perhaps a little more informal processes, yes, when we no longer hear back from the employer. I thought I was impatient, deluded, inexperienced. Then I understood that this situation did not depend on me.
I saw an image on the internet that said, "Behind every CV and Linkedin is a person with dreams, hope and family, let's never forget that." If you are an employer, keep this in mind. Sometimes we cause harm to others without realizing it. Sometimes a negative response is more positive than indifference and silence.
