Pumpkin Klepon For Orange Desserts

Hello, foodies bee hive community. I'm also happy to be able to take part in the ORANGE DESSERTS contest this week. As a former assistant chef at a hotel in Batam City, Indonesia, it feels good to be able to participate in cooking.

In fact, in today's kitchen, I am rarely allowed to cook by my wife. My wife says it's her job to cook daily food and she's happy to do that. So my job is just to make the occasional meal for the weekend for example. Like the orange desserts I made this time.

About the recipe for desserts from pumpkin ingredients that I share in this post. The pumpkin recipe is called PUMPKIN KLEPON.

PUMPKIN KLEPON means steamed pumpkin balls served by rolling them over grated coconut.

PUMPKIN KLEPON is one of my favorite desserts because it is made from pumpkin which is easy to find in my area.

In fact, pumpkins are grown on my family farm. Plus, coconuts are also very easy to get from our garden.

The PUMPKIN KLEPON colors are really nice even though I didn't use any additional food coloring. Meanwhile, the chewy texture of pumpkin balls comes from using sticky rice flour or glutinous rice flour ingredients.

THE INGREDIENTS

One small pumpkin about 0.5 kg. We can't confirm the size of the pumpkin. So I chose the smallest size.
enough glutinous rice flour depending on the pumpkin used. I prepare about 1-2 cups of glutinous rice flour.
enough brown sugar, choose the hard one because it will be used for filling. Then, chopped brown sugar.
pandan leaves as optional ingredients to create a nice smell when steaming grated coconut.
1/2 teaspoon of salt for grated coconut.
1/2 teaspoon of salt for pumpkin dough.

COOKING STEP

STEP 1

Cut the pumpkin without peeling the pumpkin.

STEP 2

Discard pumpkin seeds. Then wash the pumpkins.

STEP 3

Boil pumpkin that has been cut into pieces in water that has previously been boiled.

Grate coconut while waiting for the cooked pumpkin to be boiled.

STEP 5

Mix half a spoonful of salt in grated coconut before steaming. This is to add to the taste of grated coconut to make it sweeter and more savory.

STEP 6

Remove boiled pumpkin. Then prepare the steaming equipment. I use the same steamer for steaming. Just need to add a steamer container.

STEP 7

Transfer the salted grated coconut to the steamer container. Use a mat like banana leaves because the housing of my steamer has holes.

Then, steam for about 15 minutes. Add pandan leave to create a nice smell.

STEP 9

Remove pumpkin skin. This method is easier than we peel the pumpkin before boiling the pumpkin.

Mash boiled pumpkin, then add glutinous rice flour.

Knead dough until they can be formed into balls.

STEP 12

Form the dough by hand. Fill with chopped brown sugar. Then form the balls carefully so that the dough doesn't break due to the melted brown sugar. Make sure there isn't too much brown sugar for the filling.

Bring the water to a boil. Then boil the pumpkin balls until the pumpkin balls float on the surface of the boiling water.

Remove pumpkin balls then roll them in steamed grated coconut.

SERVING

Serve PUMPKIN KLEPON while warm. It tastes savory and sweet on the inside. The brown sugar will melt in your mouth when you bite into the pumpkin balls. What a nice chewy sweet pumpkin balls.
