Here are a few shots from a lake nature preserve that is built on top of an old landfill for this #wednesdaywalk.

This old landfill was retired years ago and it has been turned into a wetland forest preserve for wildlife and for hiking. The first critters I spotter were a pair of Canadian geese with a nest in the reeds somewhere.

They get a bit territorial when there is a nest around. This one honked loudly at me then bobbed its head at me. In goose language this is threatening cuss words.

No one wants to get bitten by a goose so I kept my distance while I walked by.

Off in the distance is the old landfill hill. When I first visited this preserve I had no idea it was an old landfill and from a distance I thought people were on the hill golfing or something... But all those little posts with their golfer bags are where they harvest natural gas from the landfill.

There are some nice pathways through the prairie grasslands that now cover the landfill. We came here mainly to look for baby racoons in a tree hollow but didn't find any this time. Maybe later in the year they will show up.

Here are the cute baby racoons we found here last year. Maybe something will be in the tree hollow by next month or so.

After bushwacking through the prairie from the tree hollow we headed back to the lake where there is good birdwatching.

The first characters we saw were some red-winged blackbirds competing for territory. I suspect the females are down below in the weeds carefully picking which one has more flair.

We spotted a great egret hunting in the reeds. I have more photos of this guy in full breeding plumage for this #featheredfriday.

The last character is just a common seagull sitting on a rock in the lake. There were also some terns flying above but I didn't manage any good photos of them so had to make do with this seagull lol. Seagull was disappointed I had no snacks with me like the fishermen that visit this lake. I always wonder if the fishermen are brave enough to eat any of the fish they catch out of the landfill lake lol, God only knows what sort of mercury or toxins are in the fish leftover from the landfill.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)
