I guess most people wouldn't think of their fridge to be a fire risk but they sure can be.
Many as half of all fridges currently being sold are said to be those of a potential fire risk.

And it's down to the manufacturers using what is called a "non-flame retardant plastic" for the backing part of their fridges, freezers and fridge/freezer products which infact could instead help a fire spread much faster in people's homes then initially thought.
Flame "retardant" plastic additives are basically compounds added to plastics to inhibit, suppress or delay any combustion.
Tests have been done and observed by Fire Brigade's that have shown this type of non-flame retardant plastic fridge backing is going up in flames just after 90 seconds.
While on the other hand a fire set in a fridge with a "metal backing" didn't take hold properly for a whole 20 minutes!
And not only that in the end the fire went out by itself, which is huge for saving lives and keeping us all safe.
But of around 500 fridge's reviewed it's mentioned that around 230 had the fire hazard plastic backing.
And oh don't think spending more money on good brands will save your ass from smoking.
DING!

As it seems even fridge models from Whirlpool, John Lewis and Smeg have used the non-flame retardant plastics on their own fridge products.
My guess is this is of course cheaper for manufactures, as the old saying goes.. they just don't make them like they used to!
There should be tougher safety standards in general, I know it may seem like a small thing but it could potentially be putting people's lives at more risk.
This once again shows that the product safety regime is simply not fit for it's purpose, but I guess you already know that.
I honestly see so much junk being sold these days in my own job I often see terrible products being sold lol, and of course in many other shops.
What I mean is many of these products just wont last long, they aren't sturdy enough.
And of course the government should no longer continue to allow these discovered "checks" and tests to go unnoticed from their so called guidelines but we all know how much they love their people.
Perhaps it's time they set up a new stricter product guideline to remind manufacturers to think about household safety.

Anyway if you got a fridge already with a plastic-backed model don't worry too much as fires caused by faulty appliances like the fridge are only at a 7% risk.
And so I guess my point is here, the next time you buy a new fridge it might be something new to consider when making that purchase decision.
