—¿Vamos a ir?
—Tu padre ¿no te contaba nada?

—¡Entonces conoce a mi padre!

—No me dejes aquí, tengo miedo.
—¡Cálmate! Aquí estarás a salvó.
—¡No Rommel! ¡No!

—Había fuerzas ocultas dispuestas a ayudarnos.

A Strange trip

He woke up abruptly, he had not felt well since the arrival of the letter sent by his grandparents. It was something he had not expected for so long he had not heard from them, he had even thought they were not alive, they lived in a small town nestled in the mountains, he did not remember anything of that huge house, his father had left there after his mother died, his father never told him anything.

photo_2022-12-11_11-39-56.jpg

—Shall we go? I would like to meet them, —said his young wife.
—It's funny, I know so little about them.
—Your father didn't tell you anything?
—He didn't like to talk about it, on the contrary, he got irritated when I asked him about my mother, so I lived only with the memory of her, I still have the photograph I took of my father from a chest. I remember the day he realized it, he reacted as if the devil had gotten into him.
—I don't think it's necessary to exaggerate, honey, — his wife smiled and hugged him tenderly, Shall we go?
—Yes.
The trip was an odyssey, the weather got so cold that the fog did not allow us to move forward, the road in the mountain could not be seen, we almost went down a ravine when another vehicle crossed.
—It had been a long time since it had been like this when I left this morning it was clear,
— said the driver.
There were eight passengers, among them a family with two children and their parents, the woman was carrying a crucifix and was praying, letting a murmur run that only disturbed the nerves, then there was an elderly man who was sleeping deeply and a fat lady who regretted having chosen that day to travel, he and his wife completed the passengers who were also fighting with their nerves.
The two-hour trip took seven hours, so they arrived just as the day was beginning to fade. They asked the driver if he knew about the Rooster family home, and he looked at them suspiciously.
—Well, you won't get lost, follow that street to the end and look up, you will see the house there.
We walked for a while along that street full of fog, sometimes we seemed to see shadows crossing in the distance, everything seemed to be shrouded in mystery. At the end we saw a slope already lost in the darkness and at the top we could see the shadow of a big house, when we were close we heard a voice:
—This way gentlemen, follow me.
The young wife was surprised.
—But we didn't tell you we were coming today.
—Perhaps news travels fast, I don't think that many strangers come to this town, —said Rommel, with a hint of malice that he didn't want to express.
Due to the weather and the hour, they could not see that house in detail, the door opened with a sound of rusty hinges and at the end of the room we saw a couple of smiling old men illuminated by oil lamps. We saw no more of the guide who brought us in.
—You look just like your mother, yes, I can't forget that look, —said the old woman.
—You must have many memories of her here, —said Rommel.
—Yes son, many, good and bad memories... I prepared something to eat, you can do it in the room, it's late and the night is very cold.
—No problem grandma, it's better if you rest.
A little bell rang and a hieratic figure appeared, it was the same one that had welcomed us.
—This house is scary Rommel, as if it were full of mystery.
—Maybe so, my father didn't like to talk about his life here.
—That man is so strange.
—Hahahaha! Are you afraid? I'm here to defend you, —she smiled and hugged him.

In the morning we could hear the birds rambunctious among the trees, the sun let its rays through the clouds. We heard a knock on the door and a deep voice announced that breakfast was ready. Yaneth was still a little nervous, she felt she was being watched.
—I think you are exaggerating Yaneth, it is so lonely here.
As she passed through the lobby she noticed a picture of a very beautiful woman, she seemed to have a blank stare.
—Who is that woman Rommel?
—That's my mother.
—That's right, son, — said an elderly lady, —that's how she was when she hadn't married your father.
—And who are you?
—I'm Amanda Volcanes, I've been the janitor of this family for years, now I'm in charge of everything, your grandparents don't want to have those responsibilities anymore.
—Then you know my father!
—He seemed to be a person with a noble heart, but he was arrogant and ambitious, his saintly mother never got to know him, tragedy enveloped her forever, taking her to the shadows, that joy that emanated from her died when the marriage was consummated.
—What do you mean? My father told me how happy they were, until she fell ill and died, you are lying.
—All of us here wish to rest, young Rommel. I suggested to communicate with you, your grandparents agreed, it was necessary for you to come and so, your father would also come, there was only one way to do it and that was to bring you.
The woman stared at Rommel's reaction, then continued.
—The young Racine represented a joy for this house, his young mother was very excited, she overwhelmed everyone with her enthusiasm. The wedding was prepared so quickly that it seemed like a dream to us. Your father in a short time had changed everything, he showed a very different character and when your mother wanted to reclaim that despot attitude, she discovered the other face, he hit her in the face and then locked her up, your grandfather confronted and ended up with several broken bones and threatened, from that day on, hell settled in this house.

You were a little joy when you arrived, we all celebrated the arrival of the heir, but your mother was still being mistreated, just like your grandparents, one day we heard cries for help, it was your mother, flames were coming out of the windows, we all tried to open that door, but it was all in vain, we thought you had died too, but it was not so, your father we never saw him again, he simply disappeared.

photo_3_2022-12-10_21-54-33.jpg

—And what happened to me?
—We only imagined that Racine had taken you away and it was proved that way years later, but that is another story, this house was full of ghosts, the people of the town were afraid to go near it, we stayed to take care of your grandparents, my person and George, the man who brought you here, he takes care of everything that is needed, he comes down to the town every two weeks, in the town they are afraid of him, he doesn't care about that.
Mrs. Amanda Volcanes sat down for a moment as if that story exhausted her, then she looked at the painting.
—Today he hasn't come down, she must be happy to have him.
—Who are you referring to?
—His mother, she comes out of that painting and walks around the house, she cries in front of her parents, she suffers a lot for having lost him, young Rommel.
Yaneth felt a cold breeze run through her body.
—That can't be true! You said she died.
—That's right, but her soul was imprisoned in these walls, but she wants to put everything to rest.
—What does that mean?
—That her father has to pay for what he did!
—My father doesn't know I'm here, he won't come!
—He must have already received the messages, he will come, he has to come to face his past.

Yaneth felt faint and Rommel held her and hugged her tightly, she could not believe that her father was a murderer. That visit to her grandparents became a window she didn't want to look into.

Rommel laid her down on the bed and made her smell camphorated oils to make her react, that story seemed crazy to her.

—Honey, we have to get out of here!
—We'll leave, but first, I'll talk to the grandparents.
—I have a bad feeling, Rommel.
—We are not the problem, it's my father, I'll check my mother's room, I want to understand this mystery.

—Don't leave me here, I'm afraid.
—Calm down! You'll be safe here.
I could see the fear in his eyes, but I knew it was the best thing to do at that moment, he went out and locked the door.
—No Rommel! No!

photo_2022-12-10_22-01-01.jpg

Rommel went to what had been his mother's room, the door was ajar. He was surprised to see the state it was in, the bed perfectly dressed, to one side a child's crib, through the window a fresh air was coming in and a backyard full of plants and a fountain where a statue in the shape of an elephant was spinning and spouting water from its trunk. I could see no trace of having been a victim of the fire.
—She said this had burned, she lied to me, my father is not a murderer, what is going on here my God?
She ran out to look for her grandparents, her grandmother was in the kitchen making tea, when she saw him she smiled.
—I could have sworn it was Racine, but no, you're my grandson, now I'm seeing your mother's face.
—I want explanations, Grandma!
—Ah! Explanations... Of course! What do you want to know?
—That woman told me that my father murdered my mother by burning her in her room.
—That's right son, I told you the truth, —Amanda spoke at that moment, —to rebuild everything, including your empty crib, where your grandparents go every night to look at your little face. Today you are here, so that that cradle knows that you exist, that you are already a man?
—Amanda! I think there's a knock at the door, oh! it seems to have arrived!
The knocker sounded hard on the wood and it seemed to be accompanied by screams.

—It's my father! How could he have arrived!
—It looks like it! Just like in the old days, your mother would get scared and lock herself in the room and we'd all get nervous. Just like in the old days!...
Racine came in angrily when old George showed him in.
—Where are they? —he shouted.
—I've been waiting for you dear, the room is hot, it's true! You lit the fire.
Racine saw his wife standing on the stairs, his face changed.
—You can't be! You're dead! You're an impostor, you want me to believe otherwise!
He ran towards the staircase to reach her, she opened her arms to him.

—Come love, I'm waiting for you, it's been so long, come!

He rushed at her, but only embraced the emptiness and collapsed.
—Dad, what are you doing? —Rommel shouted.
Rommel watched as his father came down from above, falling on the glass table.
—Dad! Dad!
He could barely stammer the word son and died. Rommel looked for his mother with his eyes and only saw the picture where she was now with a baby in her arms, very smiling and next to her with a lost look, was Racine. Rommel did not understand what was happening.
—It can't be, it's me, I must look for Yaneth.
He ran to the room where his young wife was waiting for him with signs of panic.
—We must go, honey, this is crazy.
—I'm scared Rommel, I heard screams. Did something happen?

When they left the house, they found Amanda Volcanes sitting, waiting, she looked calm.
—What are you doing here and the grandparents?
—Don't worry about them, they are calm, now they can be relieved, the family is reunited. As it should be.
—But my father's body is in there.
—George is coming, he's saying goodbye too. When Mr. Racine left, he left only misfortunes for the family, even the town sided with him, he accused his mother of being a sorceress, he told them that's why the town was godforsaken. They all gathered together and came here, where we are now, they brought with them many torches, they wanted to
burn everything. George and I fought, but we were caught and tied up so that we could witness how the fire destroyed the house, from here, I saw his grandparents looking out the window, as the town, which he helped to build, paid him for the favors received.
—You mean my grandparents are dead?
—That's right, they perished in that fire, my pain and George's was very great, so we decided to rebuild the house.
—And how?
—There were hidden forces ready to help us.
—So, the wizards are you?

The husband and wife felt an icy chill cut their breath when they saw Amanda's smile.
—What her grandparents wanted most was to have the family united and that force we harnessed, plus the hatred her mother had for Racine, so we raised this house stone by stone and the soul of each one returned to inhabit it. For darkness there is no force better harnessed than hatred, we had little time to achieve it. Everything went well.
—But my grandparents, were they real? How did you do it?
—Those two old people lived in destitution, without family, we gave them the best years of their lives,
—They didn't care that they were burned! —Rommel told him indignantly.
—They gave their all, they had nothing to lose, maybe those were their best years son, in them, their grandparents lived.
—What's going to happen now?
—It's all over now, your father will live the hell he deserves and you, Rommel boy, will go back home with your beautiful wife, we are fulfilling, George and I, we already have the road mapped out, but that's another story. There's George, bring your luggage, I hope you have a good trip.
The strange couple left them there and walked down a road that led away from the village.
Yaneth and Rommel walked in silence, dragging their suitcase, it seemed like a strange dream, when they got on the bus they saw the same passengers, the lady with the children was praying in silence, the other man had covered his face to sleep and the fat lady was complaining about the cold of the afternoon.
—I hope you had a good stay, it is a quiet town, a bit melancholic, you can breathe sadness, well it is time to leave.
Rommel and his wife did not understand, now they did not know if they had made that trip or if they had dreamed it.
