If I were ever asked what I hold onto most firmly—what or whom my faith is rooted in—I would undoubtedly say that I believe in God, above all else. The Bible declares in Hebrews 11:1: "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." I came to understand this better as I grew up.

You see, although almost everyone on my father's side of the family was Christian, my parents were not; yet, they took us to church when we were little, and that is where it all began. However, there comes a time when we mature enough to decide which path we want to follow in life. My mother had also taken that great step of faith and accepted Christ into her life. While I never really considered taking a different path regarding my beliefs—even though many around me did—I can say that my decisive moment came during middle school.

I lost my father shortly before turning eleven. Afterward, I transitioned from primary school to middle school; perhaps it was the combination of all those changes happening at once, but it was a difficult time. At times, I thought and acted out of anger; I would do the very things I didn't want to do and hurt those closest to me with the wrong words or actions.

During that time, I began doing something that had a profound impact on me: whenever I got really angry and things spiraled out of control, I would lock myself in my room. I’d shut everything out and let my anger run its course while asking myself why things had to be this way. I soon moved from asking myself that question to asking God. I would ask Him so many things, but when my questioning ended, I would break down in tears—tears born not so much of anger, but of sadness. I needed to change my attitude; I needed comfort and encouragement in my journey. That was when God drew closer—or rather, when I decided to draw closer to God. After crying, I would read my Bible; as my tears dried, I would pray. I asked God to help me with my situation, to give me the strength and wisdom to face everything I was going through, and to grant me peace amidst my distress. That is when I found true peace—the kind only God can give. He gave me strength, even though it wasn't easy; the truth is, I kept repeating a pattern that led me back to that place where, after my failures, I would turn to God and pour out my entire being before Him—and everything would simply change. It didn't happen overnight; I’d say it took me over a year to move away from aggressive behavior and begin reflecting God's love in my own life. Even now, if something goes wrong, I know exactly who to turn to, because He is always there—at any hour, no matter what happens—ready to listen. He is my Truth, my Way, and my Salvation. For that reason and more—yes, I believe in God.
