On the first and third Tuesday of the month, the Crown and Anchor Hotel holds the Cranker Comedy night.
It's run by Ross Vosvotekas or Ross Voss for short and it's always a good night.
In comedy circles it's known as a "warm room", meaning that there's to be no booing or heckling (generally). It's not easy to get a spot there either as there are a lot of local comedians competing, many of which should have moved onto bigger and better things.
I've been on stage at the Cranker a few times, but I am more likely to get a spot at the Legend's Bar but that's once every two weeks and won't begin again until next year.
Tuesday night I am went, not to get up on stage, but to make an appearance. Not hanging around the various comedy venues is a mistake, but the bigger mistake is not going up on stage at all and that's something I hope to address in the new year.
You have to be seen in order to be seen if that makes sense. I also know that procrastination is a subsconscious trauma response. More on psychology in future posts.
The entrance fee is a donation, suggested fee is $10 and you certainly get your money's worth in terms of entertainment at that price.
I've mentioned Wendy Torbet in a previous post. She has been doing comedy for years and is really good.
Fabio Migliaccio and Ahmed Amid used the refinement to their jokes that I suggested which is always cool.
Someone referring to themselves only as Scomo, did a very accurate portrayal of former incompetent Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
He was uncanny and very spot on.
There was a visit by Father Christmas, the Australian equivalent of Santa Claus. Thankfully, I'd been good this year.
It was great to see Zack Southern improve his confidence on stage as well.
The night was full of energy and it was a capacity crowd too. I even got thanked for my support throughout the year which is a good thing.
Afterwards we sat outside at tables discussing comedy until it was time for me to leave. I wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and made my way to the train station.
Next year promises to be even more fun and funnier too! I hope to get more gigs as well.
