Little Changes, Big Impact

alt

It was Friday night and I was walking from the food court in the Myer Centre in Adelaide's central business district to the Adelaide Railway Station.

I've just had a small meal.

There several tasks I needed to accomplish.

The first was to organise work for the Royal Adelaide Show. I managed to get 10 days. It's set at 8 hours a day, but I would be lucky to get that many. They normally run out of work a few hours early.

The second task was to get my Responsible Person badge laminated and to pick up some ID badges.

The responsible person badge allows me to work as a supervisor at venues that sell alcohol. A co-worker reminded me that these lead to more work.
I've also emailed the same labour hire company offering work at the Royal Adelaide Show with it to update their records.

The third task was to pick up a few new comics.

The last task is to report the squatter now living in the vacant unit to both the police and the Housing Trust.
I hoped to catch them in the act. I suspect it's one of the apparrent junkies that constantly visits the suspected drug den in one of the nearby units.

Life Changes

I started the #pyffac hashtag as a reminder to Put Yourself First For A Change. Essentially it's about putting ourselves first in order to make real changes to our lives. It's not greed or Ayn Rand style libertarianism, it's taking care of your own needs before lifting up other people.

The first change was to stop drinking soft drink. I was drinking the diet / and sugar free versions but I've decided to no longer support the companies behind them as much as possible.

The next step was to reduce my carbohydrate intake as much as possible, but not eliminating it altogether. Eating more vegetables, etc.

I've lost a few kilograms so far but I had been on an upward trend for far too long and that needed to change.

Next I decided to lift weights every night. Not heavy weights, but lighter weights initially so that I can train for longer and then occasionally lifting heavy to "confuse the muscle".

I have written a list of qualifications that a lot of job vacancies are asking for. I have also found course providers and compared prices.

Last year I got an RSA or Responisble Service of Alcohol qualification. A co-worker had reminded me about the Responsible Person badge and certification which would allow me to have supervisor level positions. I applied for it on Wednesday, got it Thursday and had it laminated and informed all of the labour hire companies on Friday.

I won't mention my other plans until I achieve them, but you get the idea. The personal and metaphorical hamstringing has got to stop.

Hamstringing is a reference to Australian Rules Football where "pulling a hamstring" while running, kicking or training is enough tonstop someone playing the game.

If you can't walk, you can run...

Speaking of walking, I am doing a lot more of it every day.

Generally being more disciplined in my home life will help too. Less video games and more reading, applying for jobs, etc.

In general, making little every day changes can make a big impact on your life. Don't hamstring yourself by talking yourself out of giving yourself the best opportunities in life.

Thank you for reading.
