The burden of chronic disease
Hello my dear Hive community I come to talk about a topic that is not so easy for me to express myself, it is about a disease that I have had since I was born; it is a genetic disease called ichthyosis Vulgaris and it is a skin disease. First of all, I am going to give you a description so that you know more or less what ichthyosis is, for those who do not know it.
Ichthyosis Vulgaris is an inherited disorder in which skin cells accumulate in thick, dry scales on the surface of the skin.
The scales of ichthyosis Vulgaris, also called "fish scale disease" or "fish skin disease," can be present at birth, but usually first appear in early childhood. Sometimes mild cases of ichthyosis Vulgaris go undiagnosed because they are mistaken for extremely dry skin.
Apart from the extreme dryness of the skin, it can also have other symptoms such as atopic skin, allergies, and recurrent infections; This is due to which side, as the skin Barrier is not properly made, is sensitive to external agents with which you can come in contact, this disease although it is the mildest of the family of ichthyosis, however, this can range from mild to severe, I have one of the most serious because not only I have ichthyosis, but I also have atopic dermatitis and are extremely prone to skin infections. I also suffer from asthma, rhinitis, and slight deafness, all as a result of living with this disease.
It has not been easy to deal with this disease, at first you do not realize that you are different; the first time I realized I was about 5 years old and it was when someone asked my dad why I had my hands as I have them, he gave a brief explanation telling him I suffer from a disease in which I could not retain water in the skin and that is why it was very dry, from that moment I had to learn to answer that question. As a child I suffered a lot of bullying because I was different, the others did not want to play with me because they believed that what I had stuck, then I was quite lonely, when I was approximately in 3rd grade a boy with a mole on his face came in and he was my first friend, parties were a horrible thing for me, because the other kids how is normal in a party could eat any candy they wanted, I unfortunately due to my illness I have an incredible amount of food allergies apart from topical, I can not eat pepitos, chocolates, cookie, lollipops, nor many things that children normally eat a party; so ever since I was a very little girl I had to learn to say no. Adolescence was also very difficult, because when others could dress as they wanted or could use the perfume they wanted or even at the time when you start to make up; I could not do any of those things because my skin only accepts cotton clothes, I can not use perfumes or anything that I have strong odor and much less use makeup unless it is hypoallergenic and even some can cause a reaction, plus its cost is exaggeratedly high. At that time my self-esteem problems worsened, while my friends only wanted to be thinner, or have more curves in certain places, my only desire was to have normal skin, one that did not cause repulsion and with which I could lead a normal lifestyle.
When I turned 16 the disease calmed down a little, I still had all the symptoms but somehow my skin no longer looked so dry and dull, even the skin on my arms began to look more normal, I had what you could say a brief rest, but the damage was done and I always felt inferior to other people, with the constant reminder that I was not normal and often came to believe that people who were with me was for mere pity, after all, who could want to be with someone as imperfect as me? Even though I started to dare to wear clothes that were unthinkable before, such as dresses or shorts, a part of me could still feel the looks of disgust and disapproval, however, this period of calm would not last forever.
About 3 years ago, I started having recurrent infections first I had impetigo while I was pregnant, I had it pretty bad, it usually only occurs in the mouth but I had it all over my face, my feet, and some parts of my arms. After the treatment, I got better but soon after I had an allergic reaction to iron, after I had my baby I was sent to take iron because I was breastfeeding, it was not an allergic outbreak but it looked like normal burns, it burned and hurt, luckily it cleared up on its own after I stopped taking the iron. A year later I had bacterial cellulitis on my face, it swelled and I got a kind of pus pimples that hurt horrendously, I could not sleep, I could not even eat because it was impossible to move my mouth well, my face began to swell out of nowhere when I was close to my period, it would sprout and the swelling reached the point where I could not even open my eyes properly.
After much sacrifice we paid a dermatologist, everyone knows that the situation in Venezuela is not easy and doctors are very expensive, when I went to the doctor he sent me a very expensive treatment, besides I have to have a skin biopsy; the treatment calmed me down a little even though I could not buy exactly the one the doctor sent me because it is really in my power to make that expense. However, even though I bought a cheaper version but not as good and efficient as the one they sent me, I have felt some relief, obviously, my skin has not improved as it should. The products I am buying are still expensive, I feel that I have become a burden for my family because it is a constant expense they have to make; my treatment mostly lasts 10 to 15 days which means that it is an expense of approximately $50 and I have to do it two or three times a month.
It has not been easy for me to feel and know that I am a burden, emotionally I feel bad and there are days when physically I am exhausted, imagine using your body a lot of medication that numbs you and yet having to get up and be a functional adult, I am a housewife, I dedicate myself to the home and my daughter, besides I try to write in Hive as much as possible and I also try to sell through the marketplace; I already have a publication about it; I have to do all that and even though my spirits are down, even though I feel bad because there are days when my body burns from scratching in my sleep, I can't do anything, just go on with my life despite that voice in my head that tells me daily that everyone's life would be much easier if they didn't have to take care of me, my treatment and all the expenses I represent.
