Lo has pillado.
¡Muchas, muchas, muchas gracias!
¡Hasta la próxima!
Anxiety and depression are the price to pay for a life well lived. - George Vaillant
My experience with anxiety is so long that I would say that we have birthday together and yet, recognizing it was the most difficult for me.
The reason; fear. Anxiety to anxiety. Why? Because in South American culture we have been told, especially men, that being afraid is an unmistakable sign of weakness, femininity or uselessness. Of course, you who read me will have immediately realized the absurdity, but for a person who was born and raised in that culture, it is not something that you simply perceive as an idea, but as something very real.
My girlfriend has an 8 year old boy. She has never been stuck in an elevator. Her aunt is 16 years old, she has not gotten stuck either but nevertheless, she has a terrible fear of getting stuck. Fear, which her nephew absorbed as if it were his own, with such horror that a stranger who saw him would think that at some point he was trapped in a very serious situation.
It was not so. It's simply that for children, ideas have emotional weight. When we talk to you about angels and demons, they are not simple fantasies, but very real facts.
That's why, looking at my own life, I never tire of reflecting and mentioning the tremendous power that a parent has over a child. So much so, that I take responsibility for stating with complete certainty that the current world was created by those people before this generation, because the subsequent ones tend to filter the previous influence, but it never manages to completely leave.
After all, you, the person reading this, if you are in this community it is because you are aware that there were harmful patterns that had to be overcome to reach the best of yourself. But nevertheless, you surely also feel like a fragment, in the darkest part of your being, where that influence still resides, whether with a very low voice, or a shouting, that you are still trying to overcome.
But I won't open my mouth to talk about it, because no one would stop me, and maybe I'll saturate the blockchain, otherwise this will serve as a preamble to a lethal secret that anxiety has and that today is wreaking havoc on the entire world.
Let's be honest. When we are afraid of something, we either think too much about it or do the opposite; Turning a blind eye in a way so absolutely monumental that it is as if it were invisible. That's why I called it a blind spot.
That's part of the reason it took me so long to realize I had anxiety.
I will use the case of social anxiety as an example to illustrate my point, because I think it is the most important today.
Of course, if you have been lucky enough to surround yourself with people you love and who love you as you really are, you already know that personal, physical contact with a person is very important. I'm not just referring to caresses, love or romanticism, but realizing that when someone tells you that they love you, in front of you, it has a very different effect than reading it in a WhatsApp window. The problem is that, even if it is through chat, it still has some effect.
A person with strong social anxiety will say without a shadow of a doubt that he does not need anyone but a computer and the Internet to be happy. It is because since there is a strong unconscious fear of approaching other people, they will always prefer the substitute. In this case, digital communication.
Does it sound familiar to you?
You got it. Those who are addicted to psychotropic substances of any kind also use these to evade the urgent need to find well-being at the real source. Of course, this is not a general rule. If you manage to find a fulfilling sense of connection with yourself, nature or animals, the lethal effect of loneliness can subdue.
It also happens in "love." What is the most common substitute for low self-esteem? The love of others. It is because with this people you try to cover a deficit, but covering a gap with what another person gives us makes us dependent and totally insufferable. The saddest thing is that inside a person with low self-esteem has such a reluctance to try to see himself in a good light that you may never convince him of his own self-hatred, but rather you may find yourself in trouble.
How about it?
Of course, in the era where we can see each other's faces with greater definition, there is still something that does not end up fitting with all this technology with which we live. It is important to remember that our overall design, as a species, has not changed much since our appearance 200,000 years ago. No matter how much you manage to write symbols or understand them back, our brain doesn't think it's enough to make you feel satisfied. Secretly, you long for a hug, or for someone who will look at you without all the poses and paraphernalia that we do in front of photos and videos, who will still tell us that we are loved.
Yes, even without makeup. Newly woken up, bitter or defeated.
I had social anxiety for a long time. I didn't know what I was missing until I jumped in with all the faith I could muster. To everyone who loved me or was just kind to my fearful self... Thank you so, so, so much!
Until next time!
