The entrance to our secret space
My partners early yarn work, I am quite impressed with the progress she has made despite only creating part time.
My writing desk and the social area for tea and alcohol and friends to sit or lay down.
A friend looking mighty photogenic
A porch that we shared with 3 other studios. It actually belonged to our friends tattoo shop below but she let us use it until she moved out.
Friends looking at the perfect scenery.
The town was having a beer boom and so it was suddenly really easy to find cheap foreign beer. I would order a few cases of Belgian beers to fill the fridge.
For about a year and a half in 2015-1016 my partner and I rented this tiny studio near the ocean in an old factory building. It cost about $120 USD a month at the time which was a steal. The prices were going up quickly in that area and our friend had been renting this room so we knew the landlord and how much it cost and that it was about to be up for rent, so we jumped right on the opportunity even though we were hard pressed for cash.
We just felt like it would be such a massive upgrade from our current lifestyle because our apartment was shared with 3 friends and they're lifestyles were all a bit wilder than ours. We liked to sleep at 12-2 while they often slept at 6 or 7 in the morning, and they drank and socialized a lot more than we did. We loved living with them, but this space allowed us to really focus on our creativity.
This is where I started blogging, where I wrote some of my favorite songs, and where I started to turn my short stories into longer narratives. I met a lot of my current Hive friends at this time, blasting SBTRKT , Teebs, OOIOO , an other ambient and psychedelic music and looking out at the ocean. I'm still in disbelief that we managed to have such a great location for creating.
My partner started her yarn work which she is slowly moving towards doing full-time now.
We also had a bunch of parties there, tame enough, not too wild, but very fun. Lots of jamming, lots of painting, a total creative space. We wanted to turn the place into a pay-what-you-want business but due to the regulations of the area and my visa status, we were worried about doing anything that might bring too much attention and get us in trouble. So instead we kept it open just to friends and friends of friends without any advertisemnts.
This was a very important time in my life and I finally feel comfortable talking about some parts of it publicly. I will have a bunch more pictures from this period so you can get into a glimpse into the little world that we created. I am looking forward to finally sharing more of it :-D
