Whenever I visited my grandfather, he would tell me fantastic stories. From the time he visited a restaurant that sold super-giant hamburgers to the time he told me about a town where all the inhabitants squeezed lemon peels to extract their aroma. Of course, I thought they were just tall tales until one day he pulled a huge piece of hamburger out of the refrigerator. Judging by its shape, it was easily the size of a twelve-inch burger, but with a double layer of meat and plenty of bacon.
That day he was in a very good mood and asked me to join him and my grandmother for their vacation in Tabasco.
Finally, the day of our trip arrived. I had my suitcase with me, but he asked me to transfer everything to cardboard boxes and load it onto a handcart because the journey was going to be very long; we were going to walk from Bustamante, Nuevo León, to Tabasco. Then my grandmother came out with three elephants. When I first saw them, I was scared, but then I thought it was going to be a great adventure to travel by elephant, unless my grandmother had other ideas...
For my grandfather, it was perfectly normal to walk everywhere, no matter how far. My grandmother, on the other hand, never missed an opportunity to take her elephants for a ride. She'd climb onto one, carry her suitcases in another, and the third, the smallest one, she'd take by herself so as not to leave it to its fate—or so she said.
We were about to reach the highway when Alfredo, my grandfather's Labrador, caught up with us. He'd gone rabbit hunting with my Uncle Beto. My grandfather, being the forgetful type he was, was very happy to see his old friend.
And so began our journey from Bustamante to Tabasco...
