Agustina conoció a Santiago en el carnaval de Veracruz donde se divirtieron mucho por algunos días, tanto que el quiso pasar las vacaciones con ella, rápidamente se enamoraron uno del otro, él estaba a punto de terminar la ingeniería y ella trabajaba como cajera en una pequeña fonda cerca del puerto. Ella le enseñó los alrededores y el le enseñó algunas cosas en ingles que ella repetía con gusto. Le gustaba pensar que con la ayuda de su novio pronto aprendería lo suficiente de ese idioma como para trabajar en turismo.
La pasaban felices platicando sobre diversos temas mientras caminaba por el malecón y luego iban a la plaza a comer algo. El padre de Agustina le decía que tuviera precaución con ese joven, pues pensaba que seguramente solo estaba jugando con ella.
-Piénsalo Agustina, ese es un joven estudiado, habla al menos dos idiomas y es de facciones finas. Tu en cambio con dificultad hablas el español y eres tan morena como cualquier otra chica de la ciudad, solo dime ¿Porqué razón te preferiría sobre las demás?, el puede escoger a la mujer que quiera.-
-Padre, yo también hablo dos idiomas, el lenguaje de nuestros padres y el español perfectamente, además también puedo estudiar cuando halla oportunidad-
A diario discutía con su padre, hasta que tuvo una idea. Si quedaba embarazada seguramente Santiago se casaría con ella pues era un hombre muy responsable. Sin decirle nada a nadie se retiró el DIU y pasaba todo el tiempo que podía con su novio.
Un día que el padre de Agustina estaba tomado, buscó a Santiago con machete en mano para exigirle que dejara en paz a su hija, uno de los amigos le pidió al viejo que se tranquilizara, pero este agitó el machete cortándole un par de dedos mientras manoteaba. Ese día Santiago se asustó tanto que decidió irse sin despedirse de Agustina.
Pasaron casi tres meses, ya se le empezaba a notar el embarazo cuando decidió irse de la casa. Unos años antes había conocido a Rafaela, una enfermera a la que le contaba todo. Ella le dijo que no se preocupara que la apoyaría, que podía vivir en su casa mientras terminaba la gestación y que luego podía dar en adopción a su hijo.
La enfermera también era partera por lo que el día que dio a luz Agustina, no tuvo ningún problema, habían pasado apenas como veinte minutos, al gallo aún no cantaba por segunda vez, cuando alguien llamó a la puerta, se trataba de Vicenta, una jovencita de aproximadamente quince años comprometida con un americano como de cincuenta. En el camino se le había roto la fuente por lo que tenía que ser atendida inmediatamente. La enfermera la atendió, el parto fue extraordinariamente fácil, pero en ese momento Rafaela tuvo una idea, hizo como que recibía a un segundo hijo y se retiró de la habitación sin decir nada, mientras Vicenta estaba tan cansada y asustada que no supo lo que pasaba. Unos minutos mas tarde la enfermera le entregaba a dos bebés.
Una hora mas tarde llegó William Lizardhard, quien al ver que tenía dos hijos no cabía de felicidad, una hermosa niña y un varón. Besó la frente de Vicenta con cariño, se hincó frente a ella y le dijo que se casarían lo mas pronto que se pudiera. Mientras tanto en la otra habitación Agustina lloraba en silencio...

She spent it happily talking about various topics while they walked along the boardwalk and then they went to the plaza to eat something. Agustina’s father told her to be careful with that young man, because he thought that he was surely just playing with her.

On the other hand, you speak Spanish with difficulty and you are not prettier than any girl in the city, just tell me why would he prefer you over the others? He can choose the woman he wants.-

She was arguing with her father every day, until she had an idea. If she got pregnant, surely Santiago would marry her because he was a very responsible man. Without telling anyone she removed the IUD and she spent as much time as she could with her boyfriend.
One day when Agustina’s father was drunk, he looked for Santiago with a machete in hand to demand that he leave his daughter. One of the friends asked the old man to calm down, but he waved the machete, cutting off a couple of fingers. That day Santiago was so scared that he decided to leave without saying goodbye to Agustina.
Almost three months passed, she was already beginning to notice her pregnancy when she decided to leave the house. A few years before, he had met Rafaela, a nurse to whom she told everything. She told him not to worry that he would support her, that she could live in her house while she finished her pregnancy and that later she could give her child up for adoption.
The nurse was also a midwife, so the day Agustina gave birth, she had no problem, only twenty minutes had passed, the rooster still did not sing for the second time that morning, when someone knocked on the door, it was Vicenta, a young girl of approximately fifteen years engaged to an American like fifty. On the way she had gone into labor, so she had to be taken care of immediately. The nurse attended to her, the delivery was extraordinarily easy, but at that moment Rafaela had an idea, she pretended she was receiving a second child and she left the room without saying anything, while Vicenta was so tired and scared that she didn’t know what was happening. A few minutes later the nurse delivered two babies to Vicenta.
An hour later William Lizardhard arrived, who when he saw that he had two children, he was much more than happy, a beautiful girl and a boy. He kissed Vicenta’s forehead affectionately, knelt in front of her and told her that they would marry as soon as possible. Meanwhile, in the other room, Agustina was crying silently ...
