Poisoning?

No one can know beforehand the strange turns fate might take; one day you’re buying antique furniture, and the next you’re in a hospital fighting for your life.

The woman seemed desperate to sell anything she could—you find all sorts of things at these little markets—but I hadn't expected her to sell me the chair as well. After a bit of haggling, we settled on 200 pesos. I asked her to hold onto it while I went home to get a hand truck. Everything went according to plan; by midday, that beautiful antique chair was already in my house. I knew my Uncle Pastor would love to see it, so I called and asked him to come over as soon as possible to help me restore it. I imagined he’d be thrilled when he saw it.

While I waited, I didn't even want to clean it; I put on a movie to keep from getting stressed in the meantime. When my uncle arrived, he stared at the chair for a moment, told me not to even think about touching it with bare hands, and rushed out.

It must have been around four in the afternoon; the temperature had reached five degrees Celsius, though it felt as cold as it had been that morning. I got up from the living room and went to the kitchen to find some cinnamon to make café de olla; I was just about to take the first sip when the phone rang again. It was my Aunt Rafaela, sounding terribly distressed: my Uncle Pastor was dead. Someone had shot him twice—once in the head, and the other time just below the collarbone, with the bullet angled downward.

However, the police report stated that the cause of death was poisoning.

Envenenamiento?
