I once attended a seminar sometimes ago and the facilitator made a statement that a lot of people have put themselves into bad health condition simply because of what they eat. He went further to say that "some people are already digging their graves with the teeth." These words sank so deep that I began to look at eating differently. I quickly realized that a major part of our health is dependent on what we eat. If you eat well, you will be surprised that the medical challenges you have been having would have been solved to a considerably large extent.

It feels so weird to see people eat unhealthily and sometimes, they tend to cut feeding cost, which may make them resort to eating substandard food. But at the end, they will spend more to treat themselves when they become ill. There is a type of food that may not be good for you. It may not be because the food is bad generally, but it may be bad for you because of some reasons or the other. For example; someone with a family history of diabetes should limit the intake of foods with strong sugar content. This is where one needs to be be constantly informed about eating and nutrition.

The more you become informed about nutrition, the better it will be to make good nutritional choice. I remember when I went to one of my Auntie's house who is Nutritionist and Dietician for vacation. During my stay there, I realized that there have been many foods that I have been eating that were wrong and many others that I am meant to eat that I do not. I had to retrace my steps and started to eat right. You do not just eat because you feel like, nor because you can afford anything you like, but you should also know that what you eat can and will affect your health either negatively or positively.

Apart from considering what to eat and what not to eat, you have to also consider timing - that is when you eat. Imagine eating a heavy meal like the Nigerian staple cuisine - Fufu at night, you may feel uncomfortable and all. There are times that you will eat certain foods and it will not be good. There may not be anything wrong with what you eat but the problem might just be the time you eat. For example; staying without food for long and then breaking with a food that has a strong acidic content may be harmful to you. When you get your eating pattern right, you will ward off certain health-related problems.

After considering when to eat, then next thing to look at is how to eat. There is a way you will eat and it will turn out to harm you instead of to nourish you. In the same way, there is how you will eat a seemingly common food and you will get the whole nutrients in the food. It is worthy to note that you do not have to be super rich or have abundance of wealth before you eat rightly. There are foodstuffs that are readily available, when eaten in right proportion, will be highly nutritious. In this part of the world, there is a particular beans known as "fio-fio," which is available in abundance, but it has high nutritional value. I believe that eating well is simply a product of choice, and may not necessarily be a function of the size of the pocket. Food goes way beyond luxury.

A lot of people prefer to spend money on material things - clothes, accessories, etc, but when it comes to feeding, they will opt for junks which add little or nothing to them. You may not know it, but everytime you eat wrongly, your body will pay for it somehow. If what you are eating is not benefiting your body, then there is no need for it.

As an elderly person for example, there are contents that you should limit the intake - like high cholesterol foods, sugary foods, foods with strong caffeine content, etc. Always remember that it is far better and easier to avoid health problems which may arise from eating wrongly, than to solve the problem if it comes. I conclude with this quote from from the ancient Greek father of medicine - Hippocrates:

Let your food be your medicine...
