A friend of mine once said that "most times, people do not give because they have abundance, but because they have good heart." This means that it is not necessarily the rich that give, but the good people that give. There are people who are very willing to help people despite having just very little, but they are willing to share from it. Yet there are people who have more than enough, but they find it difficult to help people. Some people can go out of their way to make another person's life easier even though they may also have their own challenges. The truth is that people do not help people because they have plenty money, but because they have a heart that can feel the pain of others. It is true that the size of your pocket may determine how much you can give, but it is the size of your heart that creates the willingness to give.

I have come to understand that generosity is a function of the heart. Having money does not automatically make someone to be generous. On the other hand, having little money does not also make someone to be selfish. There are some people who have very little, but can give from the little. And there are some people who have plenty, yet they find it very difficult to give just a fraction of it. Imagine someone sharing his last meal with someone because the other person is hungry. But believe me, there are others who are living in abundance, yet no one can comfortably say that they have enjoyed anything from them. You have to also understand that generosity is not measured by how much you have given, but the heart with which it is given, and the willingness behind the act.

You do not have to be rich or wealthy to be generous. Some people postpone helping people until they are wealthy. But what they fail to understand is that there will always be something within your reach to be able to help someone with. Helping someone goes way beyond money. There are things that even money cannot buy, that you can help someone with. For example, the idea you give to someone, encouraging them, sharing information with them, giving them connections, etc, may not be quantified in terms of money, but it can change the life of someone in ways you may not expect. You see, you may not have financial resources at the moment to help someone with. But you can give knowledge, good relationship, listening ears, encouragement, and sharing your experiences with them to help them.

Having a big heart will make you to see needs that even money alone may not be able to see. Someone who is compassionate will not have to wait until someone shows desperation before they are moved to help them or to show concern. They always pay attention, see the struggles of people, and respond in the way that they can. As a matter of fact, the reason why people do not help is not a function of lack of money but a lack of understanding. When you understand the needs of people, it will be easier to respond to them. People need someone who will listen to them without judging them, offer advice without belittling them, and stand with them even when everyone may be standing against them. Trust me, money might pay bills, but kindness can restore the dignity of humankind.

It is worthy to note that you should not judge the heart of people by the content of their pocket. One of the mistakes that a lot of people normally make is to assume that because someone has money, then they are mandated to help everyone around them. There are sometimes that people can be choked by lots of responsibilities, bills, personal struggles, and a lot of other commitments that you may not know about. So you should not conclude that because someone does not give you that they are uncaring. Their lack of giving does not automatically mean lack of compassion. So you have to learn to appreciate people's intentions, their sacrifices, their encouragement, and any other support that you get from them.
