There is no good thing you want to achieve that comes without a price to pay, and that includes success. It is weird to see some people that want to get to their dream without paying the required price and as such, they resort to cutting corners or going through the shortcut. Which, of course, will have consequences at the end because the short cut is not always the right cut. Until you are willing to pay the required price for what you want, then you are not ready to get it. The reason people do not achieve their dream is not because they did not dream but because they did not give the dream the right actions. Here, we shall look at a price to pay for success.

Self-discipline

One of the most important determinants of success is self-discipline. This is because it has a way of keeping someone on the right course towards the fulfilment of their dreams and also guides one's actions and inactions. Meaning of self-discipline: Well, in simple terms, self-discipline is the quality of controlling your actions, emotions, reactions, impulses, character, behaviour with the hope of having a future gain. That is, it is a way of sacrificing the "now" to gain the future. It is self-discipline that makes you to say "no" to temporary pleasure even when your whole body is screaming "yes."

Putting it differently, self-discipline is the restriction that you have created for yourself and your actions. That something may be good to be done does not make it is right at that moment. Self-discipline will help you to channel your energy towards what is right, not what is expedient. The reason why you have to discipline yourself to study for your exams is because you have put your mind on the results you want to get. In the same way, if success is your ultimate result in life, then you have to make discipline your watchword. Before you act, you need to ask yourself if the actions will put you towards the pathway of success or not, the answer to this question will determine your actions.

Workouts on self-discipline

Self-discipline, just like other factors, can be cultivated and it can grow. It is worthy to know that self-discipline is not a gift that someone gets on a platter, neither is it inherited, but it is a choice that someone has to make. This choice often comes with sacrifices. Here, let us look at how to grow and improve on our self-discipline.

1. Set goals and give them time frame

The first and most important factor towards having self-discipline is to create goals for yourself. Obviously, without having a goal, there will be nothing to drive you. These goals can be short-term, mid-term, or long-term but one thing is needful, you need to have a time frame attached to it. This will give you the required zeal to give it all it takes in the pursuit of it, and thereby leading to self-discipline. Each day you wake up, you should have a "to-do" list that will guide your actions throughout the day and of course, this will keep you on course.

Once an item is achieved in your "to-do" list, you will tick it. There is a joy that comes when you look at the list at the end of the day and see all that you have ticked. It will give you the encouragement to do the same the next day. However, one thing you need to know is that, when creating your "to-do" list, you have to do it reasonably and consider both your strengths and weaknesses. Of course, you are not omnipotent, neither are you invincible, so putting in obviously impossible items in your "to-do" list will become counterproductive.

2. Know your obstacles to success

Without telling yourself the truth about what your challenges and barriers to success are, you will obviously not overcome them. If you had failed in the past for example, you need to figure out why you failed or what led to the failure, otherwise you may fail again. For example: are you easily distracted by your WhatsApp during your study times and you wander away in chats for hours without even realizing it? If you figure this out, then the simple remedy will be to switch off your WhatsApp during your study time. You see, it is the knowledge of the problem that sets the precedence to overcoming them.

3. Create a good habit for yourself

When a particular thing becomes a habit to you, you will need little or no effort to do it. As a student for example, if you make reading at a particular time your habit, you will find yourself doing it with minimal effort. And that will ultimately lead to academic success. So to be disciplined, you need to create a healthy and good habit for yourself. I remember a friend that ones told me how he was going into bodybuilding. He mapped out a timetable of his daily schedule and stuck with it. It wasn't long, it became a habit for him that he does not require anyone's motivation to workout. Now, he has achieved his desired body structure, and that is his own success.
