If you do not define clearly what you want to achieve in life, you might not know how to go about it. It is true that setting a goal is very good, at least it is the first step towards success. However, one should note that the goals have to be clear and understandable. It will do you no good in setting a vague and ambiguous goal that you will not even understand how to go about it. When you make your ideas as simple as you can, it will facilitate easy actions towards it. A lot of people have not achieved what they had wanted to, not because they did not dream enough, but because the dream was not clear and understandable. Always try to understand what you want to do, so you can undertake it with ease.

I was once having a discussion with someone on what he plans to do. At first, he made some very massive statements and I was impressed. I mean, I thought to myself "wow! This guy has some really big dreams." But when I started talking with him about the dream, I discovered he knew close to nothing about what he mentioned. Not just that, the idea was not even clear to his own self, talk more of to others. I asked him how he would go about it, he replied that he does not know at the moment but in due course, he will know. This is almost about 3 years from that time and it is still a dream.

It is true that we are all encouraged to have big dreams, because it has a way of encouraging actions and motivation, but the dream has to also be achievable, sensible, and understandable. When we were much younger, in our primary school level, we all had aspirations of what we wanted to be in life. A friend of mine once told me that he wants to be the first man in sun. All of us envied him because we never thought of that kind of dream. But when we got much older, we only realized that his dream was actually a dead-end. No one could even possibly think of undertaking such an insane journey without melting halfway through.

A lot of people just have weird fantasies and call it dream. If your goal in not clear to at least yourself; that is, if you cannot understand what you want to achieve and how to achieve it, then you have not started at all. More often than not, it is not just the knowledge of your destination that guarantees your arrival, but the knowledge of the route to take. This is also why I believe that processes and methods also matter to success as much as ideas and goals. If you do not know how to do what you want to do, then how do you intend to achieve it? More so, ideas will not fulfil itself, it is your action that will facilitate its actualization.

The soul of any good dream should be powered by the law of intentionality. That is, you should know what you are up against. Obviously, it will be almost impossible to win a war that you know nothing about. This is actually the reason why, before soldiers go for battle or combat, they get vital intel about their enemies, which includes their strength, weakness, tactics, etc. All these are necessary so as to be able to know when, where, and how to hit them to defeat them. So in life, clarity of purpose is a vital requirement for success.

I have a friend that once told me he wants to build 6 packs abs. When I asked how he would do that, he simply told me, "just watch and see." Well, I watched closely but could not see anything because he would consume heavy-fatty foods at odd times of the day; even just before midnight. More so, he neither does workout nor gym. Well, he knew what he wanted but the methods were not clear to him. The last time I saw him, he already has a pot-belly. I humorously asked him "is this your 6 pack?" We smiled over it and he told me that he will soon get to work.

The first step towards pursuing after a goal is to understand the goal in an in-depth manner, which also means understanding the procedure to arrive there. It is true that you do not have to see the entire staircase before you initiate your first step towards climbing it, but you need to know where you are going to. Without a knowledge of your destination, you will not know when you have arrived there and you will not also know how to arrive there. This is why the place of planning comes in. You need to have a workable plan of how to undertake your actions, so that you will not be progressing in futility.
