A story was told of a young apprentice that was asked by his master to get some goods from the market. When he got there, he added his own money to the price of the goods so that he will get a little cut from the money. When he got to his master, he asked if that was what he bought with the money and he answered in affirmation. Little did he know that the shop that he bought the goods from was also owned by his master. When he went through the sales book in the other shop, he saw how much the goods were bought, and he knew the apprentice was not being honest. This was how he lost interest in the apprentice because of dishonesty. This goes to prove the advantages of being honest at all times.

Honesty is not something that you just do when you feel like or you do once in a while, but it should be a lifestyle for you. If you have been known for honesty and you suddenly decide to trail the part of dishonesty, the good deeds that you did in the past will go into oblivion and be forgotten. One thing to know is that being honest is a choice, because everyone has the propensity of either being honest or dishonest. But by choosing honesty today, you will reap the benefits tomorrow. More so, you will tend to attract people and they will entrust things into your hands because of that.

During my high school days, we normally engaged in "vacation jobs" at the end of the session. In one of the places I worked then, when workers come to work, they will be required to write down their names in the sign-in register and the time they came to work. I discovered that a lot of people would come after the grace period of 8:00am and still write that they came before that. It was beginning to look like a norm and it did not tell well on the staff, but I refused to join them in the dishonest act, even when some of my colleagues tried to convince me that it means nothing. I was rather willing to accept the little punishment of coming late if I did, than to dishonestly write a wrong time.

A day came when I came to work a bit late because of traffic issues. When the person I came with wrote 7:59am, I simply wrote the correct time I came to work under my own name; 8:20am. I knew I was going to be fined for coming to work late twice for the month, but it was better than lying. However, something happened in the office that day - a particular fraudulent activity was undertaken that very day. When it was traced, it was discovered that the fraud happened between the hours of 6:00am to 8:00am. Since they could not pinpoint the person or people involved in the fraud, they went to the register to know the people that signed in before 8:00am.

The interesting part of it was that even the people that came after 8:00am but signed earlier were all indicted for the fraud including the person I came with that chose to be dishonest, but I was free. You see, if he had follow me to sign in the correct time, he would have been free too. Sadly, none of them could come out boldly to say that they came late but signed wrongly, because it will also incriminate their past activities. This goes to prove how dangerous dishonesty is. When you are honest, it is for your own good that you continue with the goodness, because if you derail from it, your past acts of honesty will be forgotten.

One good thing about life is that it is never late to make a new turn and to do what is right. In the same way, it is never late to trail the path of honesty. It is good to be remarked for good character. There are some places where your good character; like honesty, can get you into that even your qualifications may not. The good character you exhibit and the honesty you show will do more good to you than the person you show it to. So be honest.
