What you do today will determine how your tomorrow will be

The above words were inscribed on the door to the office of one of my friends who is a student councillor and I see truism in them. The actions that you take today will deliver its consequences tomorrow. So each time you want to undertake an action, you need to ask yourself if you are ready to bear the results that will come from the action in the future. It is worthy to note that fruits do not just spring out from nowhere, they come from seeds. In the same way, your tomorrow is like the fruit, and cannot emerge out of nothing; it will come from today's actions which are the seeds.

Story was told of a man who was teaching his young son about the consequences of actions and how some of them can be irreversible. He took the son and asked him to take some nails and start nailing them on a tree with a hammer. At first, the son did not understand what the father was trying to pass on, but he obeyed nonetheless. There were about 20 nails and it took him less than 7 minutes to nail all the 20 nails into tree and then they left. In the evening, the father called the boy and told him that it is time to undo what they had done in the morning.

So they got to the tree and the father handed over a crowbar to the son and asked him to eject all of the nails from the tree. Again, the boy ejected the entire nail from the tree without knowing the reason for them. Then tomorrow, the father took the boy to the same tree and then asked him "son, what can you see in this tree?" The boy replied that he can see 20 holes in the tree. At this point, the father explained the actions to him. He told the son that the actions they did on the tree (nailing into it) yesterday, even though they tried to undo it by removing the nails, but the holes (which are the results) were still visible.

After explaining this to his son, he told him that actions will definitely have effects, results, and consequences, so one needs to be cautious and careful of the kind of actions they take. He went further to tell him that the kind of actions we undertake today will determine greatly how our tomorrow and our future will be. You may not have a choice of how tomorrow will be, but you have a choice of your actions today. With a choice of your actions, your tomorrow will be modelled after the results of your actions of today. So if you want to have a great future, you have to start the process by having a great today. Let your actions be tailored towards greatness.

More often than not, you are the greatest determinant of what your tomorrow will look like. Yes, there may be a place of luck and other inexplicable phenomena, but the place of work and action can never be overemphasized. Your life should not be lived on the hopes of, or dependency on luck. A lot of things that people term as "luck" are just rewards for extensive actions of the past. Even if luck will meet you, it is better for it to meet you while working, and it will amplify the result of your work.

While putting in actions in the present towards a great future, you have to understand the importance of maximizing time. Time is arguably the single most important asset of nature, which has been given equally by nature. However, it is how you have effectively utilized your time today that will set the precedence for a great tomorrow.

Sometimes, when you put in actions, you may not see the results immediately, but it should not stop you from putting in further actions. When a farmer plants seeds in his farm, it does not turn into fruits overnight, it has to pass through time. When a civil engineer sets to build a house, the house does not also spring up overnight, it has to also take time. As I conclude, I will drop this witty and insightful statement from a friend:

The good things of life may take time, but they are worth waiting for.
