Preparations for nights of yesteryear (Eng/Esp)

As usual, every week I have to go grocery shopping for my household, so I headed downtown with that mission in mind. Walking through Plaza Bolívar and the historic district, I noticed that a large group of people were busy preparing for Las Noches de Antaño, an event that this year is part of the celebration of Cumaná's 510th anniversary.

There was a lot of activity on the street for this reason. Both on my way there and back, I noticed people painting, setting up stages, stands, and sound systems, organizing sets, and spaces for selling food and drinks. I thought about how lucky I am to live nearby, as I don't have any problems with the schedule or transportation.

On the other hand, the mall was very busy, as the start of the holiday season also marks the beginning of a surge in spending. Although I went for some basic items, the shops were packed with people, so what should have taken a few minutes actually took me several hours. To be honest, though, the critical days have not yet arrived, when last-minute shopping tends to congest the streets. I tried to enjoy this walk anyway because it allowed me to see a new perspective of the city, now busier than usual.

Como es costumbre, cada semana se debe realizar un mercado para mi hogar, así que salí al centro de la ciudad con esa misión. Caminando, pasé por la Plaza Bolívar y el Casco Histórico, allí observé que un buen grupo de personas avanzaba en los preparativos de Las Noches de Antaño, evento que este año está enmarcado en la celebración de los 510 años de Cumaná.

Había mucho movimiento en la calle por este motivo, tanto de ida como de regreso pude advertir personas pintando, instalando tarimas, stands y sonido, organizando escenografías y espacios para la venta de comida y bebidas. Pensé en lo afortunado que soy por residir cerca de allí pues no tengo inconvenientes con el horario ni con el transporte.

Por otra parte, el centro estaba muy movido, al iniciar la época descembrina también arranca una escalada de gastos. A pesar de que fui por unos artículos básicos, los locales comerciales estaban repletos de personas, así que aquello que en teoría debió solucionarse en minutos, en realidad me tomó algunas horas. Aunque a decir verdad, los días críticos no han llegado, aquellos donde las compras de última hora suelen congestionar las calles. De igual manera traté de disfrutar esta salida a caminar porque me permitió ver una nueva perspectiva de la ciudad, ahora más ajetreada que de costumbre.
