Chronology of a Black-and-White Coffee | My entry for #Monomad Challenge [ENG-ESP]
Hello, Hive black-and-white photography lovers!
For most Cubans, coffee is like the elixir of life. In the morning, upon waking, many feel thrown off balance if they cannot drink it for one reason or another. As far as I know, very few Cubans manage to avoid headaches or a bad mood when it proves impossible to breathe in the aroma and savor the distinctive taste of this precious liquid; almost all of us here are fervent coffee lovers.
These days, as has become the norm, there is no electricity across much of the island. On this occasion, while at my son @eborosa's house, the only option for making coffee is to light some charcoal and wait for the anticipated aroma—signaling the moment to revitalize the body with the precise boost this beverage provides.
For many living outside Cuba, the process of lighting charcoal and seeing the ultimate result must seem like something new—or even unbelievable—in the twenty-first century, occurring on an island that was once a coffee-exporting powerhouse and an international leader in many respects, such as having access to electricity.
Since I often find myself thinking in terms of film frames or viewing the world as photographic shots, I couldn't resist photographing every step—and here is the result.
Once the pieces of charcoal are gathered in the stove, the heat is stimulated using a sort of lit torch that causes them to begin igniting.
The fire begins its ritual struggle amidst the smoke attempting to take hold. Fortunately, the fire persists, gifting us images that unfold like stories within its intriguing, expressive shapes.
The glowing coals were already providing ample heat, as the coffeepot signaled. Time seemed to fly; everything was ready to add just the right amount of sugar to the coffee and serve it, to be savored at leisure.
Moments of enjoyment—because life is meant to be enjoyed, despite its stark contrasts of black and white.
And so, fortunate to experience what might otherwise have gone unnoticed, I smile, take another sip of coffee, and bid you farewell for now—until the next black-and-white frame—but not without first sending each of you a warm, radiant hug!
Remember: don't forget to smile!

Recuerden, ¡no olviden sonreír!
