I honesty don't know and can't find what is the english name for Laksa Utara. Laksa Utara has been one of my favorite dish since I was a kid. There are part in Peninsular Malaysia that serve Laksa Utara whenever there a festive or celebration.
I still remember one embarrassing moment while eating laksa utara during a festive season. I was eating a lot of laksa, by a lot, I really meant a lot it, until up to one point, I vomited all the laksa that I have eaten. My mom won't stop telling this story to my daughter 😅
There are multiple type of laksa in Malaysia, such as Laksa Utara, Laksa Penang, Laksa Johor, Laksa Terengganu and Laksa Sarawak. The most noticeable difference between those type of laksa is their gravy.
To describe Laksa Utara it is a dish of rice noodles / vermicelli in a fish-based tamarind-flavoured gravy. The type of fish used to make the gravy is mackerel or sardines. Laksa Utara typically garnished with cucumber, onions, and fragranced with herbs like Vietnamese coriander and torch ginger.
Laksa Utara most dominant taste are the sourness of the asam with sweetness of the fish. Laksa is also spicy. Even so, some people still add on more bird’s eye chilies to add more of the spiciness. What I like about Laksa Utara is prawn paste is also added as a seasoning to add more flavor and depth.

I love to add extra onion when Laksa Utara. My sisters, they like to add pineapple slice. It is really depending on each individual taste and liking.
Before covid19 pandemic strike, there are a lot of laksa stalls all over the state. Some even operating at all hours. Due to pandemic, most of the stall is closed. Some are closed for good. In my housing area, the most popular laksa stall is Man Laksa Utara. Since dine-in is not allowed, they have adapt to online order and delivery.
Unlike me, both of my daughter does not like Laksa Utara that much. They will eat it when I buy it from laksa stall or whenever
