I went for an interview at a well-known corporate firm. I had my bangles on, my anklet, earrings, and a modest necklace. My dress was simple and neat, nothing flashy. I knew the anklet might raise a few eyebrows; not everyone is comfortable with such things in formal settings. But I wore it anyway.
I’ve always had this attitude- fearless in a gentle way. I’m naturally friendly, warm, maybe too open for some people's liking. As I entered the interview room, I smiled, greeted the panel, and sat down after being asked.
They asked the usual questions, but I could sense a shift in their tone. They were curious perhaps even hesitant about my very casual, friendly demeanor... and yes, the anklet came up too.
I told them honestly: “I believe in being myself. I can’t imagine doing my best work in a space where I have to wear a mask every day. If I have to hide who I am just to fit in, I’ll lose the part of me that makes me good at what I do.”
And guess what? I got the job. I came out first on their list. And that’s it, my lifestyle choice.
