Democracy has been defined simply as the government of the people by the people. The word "democracy," according to what I was taught in school, is derived from two Latin words: "demos," meaning "people," and "kratos," meaning "power." It is further explained to mean power of the people. For the people and by the people, in a democratic government, the leaders are usually chosen through an organised election, where a willing citizen of the society who is deemed qualified comes out to show their interest in a leadership position and contests with others who also have a similar interest for the same political seat.
The democratic system of government has become very popular, with most countries worldwide practising it for a long period of time. Although due to the overwhelming growth of corruption and the weakness of the established institutions in a democratic system, the democratic systems have been falling short. Individuals these days happen to enter into positions for personal gain instead of the interest of the people who have chosen them to lead. We have seen chases of the political class using public funds, which were meant for the development and growth of the economy, for personal gains without any fear, and mostly go unpunished.
Though the democratic system has its advantages, I feel the disadvantages of this system outweigh the advantages. Since the ruling class are giving absolute rights to many things, most of them abuse these powers. Our democratic system has only created room for the few who are in power to oppress the many they are meant to serve. Most politicians, after being elected, tend to forget why they are in that position.
Having countries still struggling to host a free and fair election, the so-called democracy is almost a façade since the ruling class forces their selves on the masses through heavy rigging of the elections that was meant to be free and fair, and even when the elections could be free, the population most times vote based on ethnic and religious sentiment, allowing the wrong candidate take the victory leaving the more qualified and the right candidate at the time to take the lost.
A lot of things, including what I have mentioned above, have prevented democracy from becoming an ideal type of system of government making the absolute monarchy practiced in the United Arab Emirates as my ideal system of government, going through the history of the Emirates and how they have landed themselves where they are today, I am inclined to choose the absolute monarchy as the best system of government due to its success in the UAE. A government is meant to serve its populace, making sure that life is easier for them to navigate with the help of the government.
While it is the duty of the government to tax citizens of the country some amount in tax, it is also their duty to use this money properly, building schools, hospitals, road networks, a good transport system, and also subsidise their living.
The democratic system of government has created a lot of loopholes, leading to excessive waste of public funds and resources.
