A Man Called Otto, directed by Marc Forster, starring Tom Hanks as a grieving widower, Otto; Mariana Trevino as Marisol; and other supporting actors; genre: comedy-drama. Produced and released in 2022.
The movie is about a man who likes to have everything in the right order, a strict neighbourhood watch, and shouting at people for not doing the right thing as the rules have outlined.
The movie started slow in the beginning, showing a man who, after he was forced to retire and had lost his wife, had nothing to live for and decided to end his life. The arrival of a lovely Mexican family in the neighbourhood will interrupt his attempt; he will be forced to help them and later become friends with them. Marisol and Tommy.
There is a person for everyone, one that will care for you deeply, see you as you are, a person that makes you better and also makes you want to be better, a person that is invested in your growth, a person whose presence in your life adds value.
The story of Otto and how he meets Sonya, his wife, shows how love can be destiny as well as a decision. It was like they were destined for each other; a glance at her had made Otto lost in awe.
The best part of the movie for me was when Sonya realised that he was the man for her, choosing him even before he had finished saying his intention; this reaffirms my belief that the one for you will not make you suffer. It was a simple and sincere gesture that made her choose him, and she was all in from the beginning to the end. The right person doesn’t make you pursue them endlessly; they see you and commit to you with the whole of their hearts.
Otto never knew meeting Sonya was going to turn his life around, he had lost hopes in life and wanted to join the army but he was disqualified as a result of a heart condition (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) he had, meeting Sonya, Otto finds purpose and meaning to his life, and all that will feel lost when she dies and until a new family came to the neighbourhood. And he found purpose again.
Otto’s life was black and white before he met Sonya. Meeting Sonya brought colours to his life; she brought an extraordinary feeling to his heart. There was nothing before her and nothing after her death; that was how he felt, empty without her.
The movie brought a lot of emotions in the end, explaining grief, loneliness and communal living; how losing a loved one could affect a person and make them feel lonely and lost, and the importance of community. You don’t have to know people all your life before they mean the world to you. A stranger can become a lifeline when everything seems lost.
A must-watch for anyone who has or is experiencing grief, loves comedy-drama, and values stories about human connection. It is a movie that could make you cry, laugh and reflect on love and community. It is a movie about hope and the beauty of relating with others.
