Went to Fundao market for the first time in several months on Monday, the main purpose of which was to buy some fruit and nut trees, and I was pretty happy with what I managed to pick up for the price.
I actually did the shop in two rounds, on account of the fact that I was parked bloody miles away, well, about 400 metres, which is far enough to make lugging trees back to the car a tad awkward.
At stall one I managed to get, for 25 EU (which sounds like a bargain to me):
So that comes in at around 4EU per tree, which is just remarkable!
Then at stall two I couldn't help but buy two Chestnut trees - these were more expensive at 20 EU and 15 EU a pop - but more established, so not bad for two trees which COULD (fingers crossed) get massive and be yielding some of the most delicious nuts you can get!
The trees basically became my passenger en route back.....
I didn't fancy lying them down flat given the lack of protective materials.
I'm going to put the two chestnut trees up in that rather large looking gap on the edge of my land up the slope, behind the wood pile, lots of oaks around, so I think they'll be in good company, and there are at least two places where nothing is really established. I just have a feeling they'll do well up there.
The Lemon Tree is going UP near that IBC - A good plant to crown out the fruit tree terraces!
I think I might get an orange tree and a couple of Pomegranate trees to keep it company.
The other trees I put in a bag with some compost and a little water, where they can sit for a couple of days while I dig the holes to plant them in....
In retrospect I wish I had dug the holes BEFORE planting the trees, but I know I've got a while before I have to get them in, so no problem.
I also want a couple of almond trees into the mix, but I don't want more than 20 trees in my first year, that's about my limit for what I can keep watered over the hot summer.
So my main task for the rest of the this week is tree-planting, which beats organising fire wood and general tidying up, that is for sure!
