I think we all once think about what does actually shapes a person's morals? Then I think about my childhood. I think our surroundings can influence us the most, like our culture, religion and life experiences. To be honest, the biggest influence has always been my upbringing. Whatever I have learned was from my deceased father. He taught me those lessons at home and it stayed with me even after so many years.
As you guys know my father passed away because of kidney stone, it was an unfortunate thing that had ever happened to me. I was still young but the values he taught me before he left have never faded. My father had great values, he believed that honesty and kindness mattered more than money or success. Whenever I got distracted from the path he reminded me and my brothers that our character is what people remember. So, we should be kind to people. He also said if money is lost it can be gained but if respect is gone then it can never be gained. We should never stoop low which decreases our respect. Even though I did not get to spend many years with him his words stayed in my heart and now I'm in my fifties. I remember each and every word he said. After he passed away, I kept trying to live by those same values because I felt that was the best way to honor him.
In present, I have a wife and two young daughters. I try to teach the same moral lessons to my children. The world isn't the same as it was before and I know it's meant for revolution. It's very different from the one I grew up in. So, there are many new cultures, technologies and different ways of living. So, I try to cope up with today's generation and I do not expect my daughters to think same like I do. Still I try to make sure they learn to respect themselves and knows the importance of kindness, honesty and how to take accountability for their actions.
We have free will and can do anything as we wish but that does not mean every choice is the right one. Even if something is legal does not automatically makes it good. There are certain things when we act on them there might not be any laws against it but they can still hurt people. We shouldn't damage anyone's trust or leave someone with emotional trauma or pain. I believe our conscience should guide us even when no law is watching.
In this life, I have learned many lessons. No one is born pious but we can try to make ourselves better. I have met dishonest people but I do not judge everyone the same. Maybe they couldn't learn those morals that's why they turned out to be like that. I believe everyone has a reason to be the way they are now. So, my experiences have shown me that doing the right thing is not always easy but it is always worth trying. A good moral standing is never about perfection. We are human beings we make mistakes. What matters is admitting them and learning from them. I think our morals should always push us towards to become a better person.
In the end, I think my moral values come from the foundation my father gave me and the way I was raised, also I have learned some through my experiences. I think everything happens for a good reason and it guided me from childhood until today. I wish my moral values will continue through my daughters as they grow into kind and responsible adults. Even if they don't, I won't mind. It's their life, their personal choice and I can not force them, I can only try to guide them. Everyone has a different story and a different journey so I can't tell about others but this is how my morals were shaped.
