This most numerous and widespread species of woodpeckers inhabits deciduous and mixed forests.

Omnivorous. In summer he feeds on insects, namely ants, beetles, caterpillars. And in winter, spruce and pine seeds, which he extracts from cones, become the main food. To do this, he makes a special recess in the tree, the so-called "forge". Thus, the cone can be tightly clamped.
By the way, in the spring he drinks birch sap, deliberately punching holes in the bark.
