Apart from my childhood dream of becoming a medical doctor, I do think handwork can never be as successful as professional careers, but that was a lie. Determination helps us push ahead to achieve our set goals as humans. In life, I was able to find my hidden passion through curiosity, something I never imagined myself doing, but because I wanted to find out how it's been done, I later found myself enjoying it and making it part of my life.
My aunt happened to be a fashion designer; she performs magic with any fabric, which is to say how good she is at what she does. I always imagined how she could be this good. Watching her closely as she cuts fabrics and sews them together to make a complete dress always amazes me, and I do ask myself, Can I do what she is doing? But I guess I'm a bit lazy to give it a trial. Fortunately for me, after my junior certificate examination, I had a lot of spare time, and most of this time I spent it sleeping or watching movies. But one day I decided to pay her a visit, which would have turned out to be a simple and pleasant visit, but instead, I ruined it with my curiosity. You will want to ask me how.
My visit would have been a harmless one, but I let my curiosity about how sewing is being done get the better of me. On the day of my arrival, I met her sewing a fabric that belongs to one of her customers who is coming soon to collect it. I watched her stressing herself out, and I wished I could help her with it, but I don't know how because it isn't something I know how to do. Just as she was about to round up the one she was sewing, another customer came, and she wanted her cloth treated as an emergency as she would be needing them for a party at the weekend. "You needed this cloth by the weekend, and you are bringing it today, being Tuesday?" I replied to her, then she said "I just got the money paid; that's why I'm unable to bring it earlier".
Glancing at my aunt, whose stress is written all over her face, I could only imagine what is going on in her mind. "I wouldn't be able to sew your cloth because I'm a bit stressed these days, my aunt replied. With a disappointed look on her face, she pleaded with my aunt to help her out, as she is one of the best fashion designers around who can help her out during this impromptu period of hers. "You know that you have been my fashion designer for a while now; you can't let me down this way," her customer innocently told her. She had no choice but to help her out.
The following day, which happened to be Wednesday, my aunt cut out the woman's fabric to sew her desired style, which they had agreed on earlier. I watched closely as she turned the fabric into nothing less than rags by cutting it into different shapes and sizes. I kept on wondering how these rags would make a completely fashionable dress. After the cutting, she decided to take a rest for an hour, and out of curiosity, I picked up the cut fabric and decided to help Aunt sew them together even though I don't know how to.
I took some of it and joined it together, not minding the color of the thread I was using. "Am I not going to be in trouble? "I thought to myself. "I was only helping," I replied. The thread got tangled and messed up the fabric I was joining. Instantly, my heart skipped, feeling like jumping out of my chest. I quickly removed the ones on the machine that I sewed the wrong way. As I was trying to take out the thread from the fabric, my aunt woke up and saw me with her customer's fabric trying to separate it. She shouted my name at the top of her voice, and then I realized what I'd gotten myself into.
"What have you done?" My aunt yelled at me, looking ferociously at me. I was scared to death, and the only word I could mutter out of my small mouth was "I'm sorry". "Are you sorry? Sorry for what exactly" she barked at me. I searched my archive and couldn't see any words I could use in composing a reasonable sentence. Then I mustered up the courage and whispered out, "I'm only trying to help since you were tired and I believed that since you can do it, I can also". With a teary eye, she snatched the piece of fabric I was holding and gave a loud hiss.
Then she immediately sourced out the way to get the fabric back in good shape, and thanks to her professionalism, she was able to sew the desired style her customer requested without any itch on the fabric. After sewing, she checked thoroughly and was satisfied with what she was seeing. Then, after dinner that night, I kneeled to apologize for my mistake. "I let my curiosity get the better of me; I'm sorry, Aunt," I spoke out. She looked at me and gave me a bright smile, then said, " You can't be a boss to something you don't know; I understand you wanted to help, but you should have learned first, and today you would have put me in big trouble if I hadn't woken up on time; don't ever repeat that." She snapped and hugged me.
After I returned to my parents, I realized how my curiosity would have put my aunt in trouble, which I felt bad about, but at the same time, my curiosity helped me discover my interest in fashion design. "I can do this, and I will," I said to myself affirmatively. I discussed with my parents my interest in learning the trade, and my request was accepted with open arms. I enrolled with no delay, and I began my apprenticeship journey. Today, I can say my curiosity helped me discover my passion for fashion design.
