Cerro Avila. Entre Caracas y La Guaira - 2015 / Avila Mountain. Between Caracas and La Guaira - 2015

There are events that shake the earth beneath our feet and, at the same time, stir the deepest part of our soul.

The recent seismic events in Venezuela have left us all with a heavy, wrinkled heart, suddenly showing us the fragility of what we build with so much effort, but also revealing the indestructible strength of those who refuse to let go of each other's hands in the midst of chaos.

In the moments of greatest darkness, when the earth roared and fear took over the streets, brave eyes and hands emerged that restored our faith in life.

When thinking about the questions posed this week by Ladies of Hive, it is impossible not to respond with eyes misty with emotion and a soul full of a deep desire to embrace those who have sustained us.

Nuestras manos / Our hands

The Embrace We Owe to Our Heroes

If I had in my hands the power to do something for those men and women who did not think twice before kneeling among the rubble to return a child to their mother's arms, rescuing people they do not even know using only their hands, and who still remain there even after a month, I would not be satisfied with giving them a diploma or dedicating a fleeting round of applause to them.

True heroes are made of flesh and bone; they feel exhaustion, they cry in silence when no one is watching, and they carry the invisible weight of the lives they could not save.

That is why the first thing I would do for them is to ensure a sacred space for them to heal inside.

Saving lives leaves indelible marks on the spirit, and caring for the mind and heart of our rescuers and volunteers with loving and human support is the very least we owe to their bravery.

They need to know they are heard and supported, feeling that they are not alone with their ghosts or with the trauma of what they have witnessed.

Reparaciones en casa tras los terremotos. Julio 2026 / Home repairs following the earthquakes. July 2026

I would also find a way to ensure that they never have to go out on a rescue mission again feeling the anguish of not having the necessary resources.

Seeing someone willing to lay down their life with their bare hands is deeply moving, but it is an injustice for them to work without proper protection.

Equipping them with the best tools and offering them peace of mind is not a favor; it is a debt of love.

And finally, I would make sure that their own families are protected. Those loved ones who stay at home holding their breath while they risk everything deserve the certainty that the devotion of their parents, spouses, or children will bring them back home, safe and sound.

The most beautiful tribute we can pay to those who gave everything to give us back hope is to care for their lives with the same tenderness with which they embraced ours in the midst of the ruins.

Building Bridges of Love That Cross Borders

When pain knocks at the door, we realize that solidarity truly knows no borders or distances.

Seeing how international aid and the affection of people from other countries mobilized to embrace our people in a time of need is something that moves us to tears.

However, for that door of generosity to remain wide open, we must nourish the bridge that connects us with great strength, truth, and respect.

For me, the only way to keep that spark of constant help alive is through pure and straightforward honesty.

Whoever extends a hand from afar does so out of love and empathy; therefore, they need to feel the peace of knowing that their effort reached where it was needed most.

Showing clearly and with sensitivity the destination of every grain of sand, sharing the stories of the faces that were fed or sheltered thanks to that solidarity, is the most noble way to give thanks and to cultivate a trust that lasts over time.

Likewise, I firmly believe in the power of closeness. Aid is warmer and more human when it arrives directly through the hands that are already on the ground: local foundations, organized neighbors, churches, and everyday volunteers who know every corner, every family, and every real need.

Relying on these community networks prevents love from getting trapped in cold or distant red tape, or from falling into the wrong hands.

And even when relying on modern tools or digital platforms to help funds travel without obstacles, the important thing is to keep the essence intact: to remind the world that behind every donation there is a life recovering its dignity, a child smiling again, and a home beginning to rise once more.

At the end of the day, rebuilding what the earth shook is not a moment's task. It demands the tireless strength of those at the scene of the disaster, the infinite kindness of those who support us from a distance, and everyone's commitment to remain a refuge and comfort for those who need us most.
